How awful, those poor women. It sounds like there was corruption involved with allowing the attackers into the prison so I doubt there'll be true justice even if the actual murderers are caught.

TheMurderousGoose · 21/06/2023 10:45

Absolutely fucking horrifying.

I remember watching a doc about Honduras and how it's the most dangerous country in the world to live in as a woman. So much violence and so little justice,

ArabeIIaScott · 21/06/2023 10:45

Yes, from the sound of it gang violence is common and violent prison riots have happened before.

Earlier article on gang violence, with women often the victims:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-65359336

'Women in particular often become victims of sexual violence and femicides there, with an average of one woman murdered every 28 hours.'

Relatives of inmates react as they wait for news about their loved ones outside the Centro Femenino de Adaptacion Social (CEFAS) women's prison following deadly riot in Tamara, on the outskirts of Tegucigalpa, Honduras, June 20,

Honduras prison violence: At least 41 killed in women's jail riot

The country's president says she will take "drastic measures" after the loss of at least 41 lives.

Sorry, did they allow armed male gang members into the prison or were the gang members female?

Rightsraptor · 21/06/2023 12:36

The BBC report is characteristically unclear.

They say 'people' died, so were there males as well as females? Is it a prison with a male section and a female section? And how the hell can anyone smuggle weapons like those into a gaol?

Hopefully more information will be forthcoming. But how utterly horrendous.

DenmarkStreet · 21/06/2023 12:43

It will be very interesting to see the news coverage on 41 dead women in a prison compared to 5 rich men in a submarine.

It isn't at all clear.

Yes. Is the international community going to mobilise expensive resources to help women in jail in Honduras?

If only.

Mochudubh · 21/06/2023 13:52

I take it that members of the respective gangs (all women?) were held in separate parts of the prison but that one gang got access to the part of the jail holding the other gang members. But I could be wrong.

From the Independent:
Officials have said that the violence was the result of a clash between the rival Barrio 18 and Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) gangs...........

Agence France-Presse reported that Delma Ordonez, a lawyer representing family members of the inmates, said that members of a gang entered a part of the prison occupied by a rival gang and set it on fire.

41 Dead In Gang Violence At Honduras Women's Prison: Police

Clashes between rival gangs at a women's prison in Honduras left at least 41 people dead Tuesday, police told AFP.

Oh my god, this is horrific Sad

Weal · 21/06/2023 14:09

How horrific. Thanks for highlighting this as if hadn’t seen it reported when I looked at the news today

Bewilderedandhurt · 21/06/2023 14:12

This is a riot within a prison carried out by female inmates who were affiliated to a street gang and attacked other rival inmates.

ArabeIIaScott · 21/06/2023 14:35

So it is. I had the impression they'd broken in from outside, but it seems they were in a neighbouring cell.

'inmates identified as members of the Barrio 18 gang were able to get guns and machetes into the prison, or move freely into an adjoining cell block and slaughter all the prisoners there.
... the attackers “removed” guards at the facility — none appeared to have been injured — around 8 a.m. Tuesday and then opened the gates to an adjoining cell block and began massacring women there.'

Horrific.
