The spokesman said that teachers should not teach “contested opinions as facts” and called for headteachers to intervene in extreme cases.

“It would not be right to comment on the actions of a specific individual or a specific school without knowing the full details, but we understand why these reports will be concerning for parents,” the spokesman said.

“In broad terms, teachers have a responsibility to encourage their students to engage respectfully with those they disagree with.

“They should also not be teaching contested opinions as fact, shutting down valid discussions and debates.

“It’s important parents and carers are reassured that children aren’t being influenced by personal views of those teaching them. Any example that strays from this would be wrong and we would expect headteachers to act.”

Unlike the headline the article makes it clear that a "spokesman" (how old fashioned and sexist shouldn't that be spokesperson?!) has said this so Sunak may or may not have a public opinion about this ...

But the Telegraph seems to be keen to keep the issue of self identifying on their front pages.

When I first heard about children doing this I thought (hoped) that it was younger children making fun of the trans generation, but seems not.

So if trans rights are human rights, what are trans? Why do they need human rights if they are not human, what other inanimate object of animal can obtain humans rights? How can you take away the human in someone to make them not a human?

Its a weird little paradox isn't it. They go from being the worlds most articulate and aware toddlers who, while we pulled ours out of dog bowls and attempted to stop them eating woodlice, were asking " when is God going to correct his mistake and give me a vagina? " To extremely immature and incapable of basic functions like sensible discussion as adults.

I agree it doesn’t matter whether a child in this particular classroom 100% thinks she’s a cat, or was just playing, or there’s no cat situation here at all. The teacher’s attitude and behaviour is appalling anyway and has to be challenged. But it is important that the general trend is happening. Not just cats but the obvious ramifications of actually teaching kids in school that you can decide to identify as something you biologically cannot be and other people have to agree or get punished. It’s inevitable that’s going to cause all kinds of chaos and confusion in kids and a line has to be drawn - and it makes no sense saying you can be the opposite sex but not a cat. They’re both impossible.

What I hope happens is that this ultimately resolves into an understanding that you can have whatever gender expression you want but that has nothing to do with your sex, which remains the same, and your body doesn’t need changing. You can be “transgender” or “non-binary” (if you want to be so sexist as to label it that way) via your gender expression, and you remain male or female, just as you remain human if you have some cat-like qualities.

The two statements aren't incompatible.

The first is about protection from harassment for believing that a person's sex is distinct from their self-perception of "gender" (if they have one). The converse view would also be protected.

The second is about political bias in teaching as fact that 'gender is not linked to the parts you were born with'.

(And are you confident that "gender" and "gender identity" the same thing, given that no-one can define them?)

I also saw an article that claims children are "identifying as Moons".

No kid is genuinely believing they are a cat or an animal or the Moon. They are aware of the "gender critical" discussion which is in the news every single day and are just taking the piss.

There is an 'Otherkin' community - if you google it, and in some american schools teachers have been advised on how to deal with pupils identiying as 'otherkin'.

@NotHavingIt, I didn't click the link but yes we should continue to allow children to play and pretend to be animals, as they have done as long as humans have been around.

Just keep in mind no kid is actually being sincere when they echo the daily mail and say there sincerely are identifying as a cat/moon/hologram etc. They're taking the piss.
