"Special males"

Someone didn't want to say Father's day breakfast and ended up phrasing it as "special males breakfast".

The next few years are going to be fun.

Well maybe they are meaning all the father like figures in their lives lovely idea for father's Day for those that aren't actually biological fathers but have that role

musicalold · 16/06/2023 14:40

I don't have a issue with this. I don't see it as a gender thing, it's about making sure that kids who don't have a father in their life can still celebrate the father-figures that they have.

I think that's sad for all the men who are loving (and beloved) fathers.

In the same way "activists" shouldn't remove the word mother from the vocabulary, they shouldn't take father either.

Why. Aren't biological bfathers special?

IlonaRN · 16/06/2023 14:47

It's exclusionary!
What about all those transmen that are fathers? "Special males" excludes them!!!
😆

People have always given gifts to their grandads, uncles or other fatherly male figures in their lives on Father's Day; it is not a new invention, and it doesn't require a politicised re-definition.

JacquelinePot · 16/06/2023 14:49

Ffs. I'm not the one calling it something other than father's day. I'm sure lots of dfaters are special

"Special males" as a term, only has the merest hope of working if we all already know that what we're actually talking about is father's day.

If they want to include men who aren't biological fathers they could say fathers and xyz. But they don't. Because the point is breaking down categories so that any one thing can literally mean any other thing.

Quite!

Whe you remove or erode the specific meaning, and naming, of a day - the whole event becomes empty and devoid of any meaning. It doesn't need a re-definition. People are flexible and wise enough to interpret it in ways which meaningful to them, and they always have done.

It is yet another attempt at de-stabilisation of existing identities.

No-one is taking it from you. You are free to use mother and father as you wish.

Not even "identities", [how I loathe that word, now] but categories

Yes, that as well...but also identities of the more traditioanal and stable sort.

But then the fact that they hold that role as a father like figure is what's being celebrated on that day. So father's Day still makes more sense than special male which could be a boyfriend, son etc etc

thatsn0tmyname · 16/06/2023 19:12

How long before someone complains that 'males' is exclusionary?

PatatiPatatras · 17/06/2023 14:42

I don't think it's a gender thing either! I think it is a prime example of chaotic good. In the name of trying to do good, we've ended up with utter stupidity that people are wary of questioning because it might make them feel on the opposite side of good!

In the name of including all male guardians who are father figures, we have ended up with the most stupid wording possible.
Special males breakfast... it is completely and utterly a daft phrase.
