I thought FWR might be interested in Davies’ book. Here’s an interesting interview she did in The Telegraph to discuss it:

Sharron Davies: ‘I lost the vast majority of work the moment I put my head above the parapet’”

I’ve pre-ordered a copy of the book - it’s the least I can do to support her after she’s joined the fight to protect women’s sport.

Well done Sharon. I support you. I will be buying the book.

45387pob · 15/06/2023 23:18

I will buy this book. May never read it, but I really want to show Sharon some solidarity. She's been so brave putting her head above the gender ideology parapet and she deserves our support.

Redshoeblueshoe · 15/06/2023 23:26

I love Sharron, she has been fabulous. I will be reading her book

CreamyFucker · 15/06/2023 23:31

Just pre ordered

determinedtomakethiswork · 15/06/2023 23:54

I will buy that too. She is amazing.

From the Telegraph interview:
"In February of this year I was asked to speak at a rail industry event, which seemed like the tide was turning,” Davies recalls. “It was just an after dinner-type motivational speech about my swimming career. The transport minister Huw Merriman would be speaking before me. But then the day before, I received a very curt email informing me they no longer wanted me to come because I was a transphobe.
“When Huw heard, he first rang them to ask them to reinstate me. When they [refused] he withdrew, which I found admirable,” says Davies. "

I was really happy to have read that. Huw Merriman is my MP and in the absence of any independent candidates who show any concern for women's and girls' rights I will be voting for him in the GE.

flyingbuttress43 · 16/06/2023 10:26

From the interview:

".......Sometimes it feels less like a transgender issue and more like an ultra-extreme men's movement that aims to put women back in their place."

Nailed it Sharron.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 16/06/2023 10:44

Really hope the book does well - she's been a fantastic advocate for women's sport.

MustardCress · 16/06/2023 10:56

Ordered! Thank you Sharron. You are a real inspiration.

SallyLockheart · 16/06/2023 11:23

will try to buy it from my local independent book shop to support indie book shops rather than Amazon

TheBiologyStupid · 16/06/2023 12:16

A great article, after a weird start. I guess from "So far, so Hello! Magazine" that it was a deliberate parody, but it made for a disconcerting couple of opening paragraphs.

crumpet · 16/06/2023 12:19

I have preordered

As a result, East Germany became dominant in the pool, overtaking the United States as the strongest female Olympic nation. Its swimmers won 98 of 102 gold medals awarded to women at European Championships between 1974 and 1989.

I remember the scandal, but I didn't realise how all-encompassing it was.

UtopiaPlanitia · 16/06/2023 15:35

RubyTrees I was really surprised (and very pleased) to learn that Merriman remonstrated on Sharron’s behalf and then withdrew from the event in solidarity with her - our current society has conditioned me not to expect much in the way of principled behaviour in public life.

zanahoria thanks for the link to the podcast - I shall add that to my current listening queue.

The article was a strange mix of puff piece and thoughtful interview but I think Sharron’s intelligence, determination and drive came across really well. I very much hope she is given pundit work by BBC or ITV during the next Olympics. It would be very unfair that, for example, Gary Lineker could publicly air his views on politics (and still work with BBC Sport) but Sharron Davies not be allowed the same leeway.

I've preordered too in support.

TonTonMacoute · 16/06/2023 15:44

She came over very well in that article, it’s good to keep reminding people that ‘gender critical’ men are not subject to anywhere near the level of abuse and intimidation that women are.

That fact blows my mind, frequently! Women are punished so much more (and much more thoroughly/viciously) for dissenting from the accepted narrative.

Probably coincidence, but I particularly like the ad for rose wine in the article which shows men, real men, along with women wearing all pink clothing ( yup it's cos rose is pink) without any rainbow diversity shite involved. Yes, pink can be a manly colour too! ( sorry, misses point of thread)

viques · 17/06/2023 16:33

Terrific article. I was very moved by her account of Petra Schneider, and the compassion she felt for her, as she rightly says, those German swimmers were victims of a corrupt system and are sadly paying the price with their own poor health. Compare them with the trans women athletes who know exactly what they are doing by muscling in ( pun intended) on womens sports to cash in on the lucrative sponsorship and appearance deals that are not available to them as mediocre athletes competing in mens events . And since many of them are probably not even bothering to take hormone treatment, and certainly aren’t proposing surgery, the detriment to their physical well being is nothing compared to the devastation the German women face.

I too would like to see more high profile male athletes stepping up to the plate to support Sharron and other women. Unlike female athletes they won’t lose funding or sponsorship , and what is more have nothing to fear from trans athletes in terms of missing out on medals and records so can’t be accused of having an axe to grind competitively . Where are you male athletes, stop lurking in the locker room and come onto the pitch/poolside/track/arena to support your fellow athletes.

Another good review from the Times - I hope the share token works - along with lots of positive comments.

Yes exactly, just compare the amount of shit thrown at Rosie Duffield for whatever she says, or even her 'likes' on Twitter, and the fact that most people had no idea Huw Merriman supported Sharon in this way, because it didn't cause a mega over-reaction so went completely under the radar.

Men get a free pass, women get thrown to the wolves.

Agreed.

Odd exception : Glinner. He gets dog's abuse and can't work. Perhaps he's the token male target?

AHugeTinyMistake · 17/06/2023 17:39

I also love Sharron. She was a fantastic swimmer and speaks from a position of real knowledge and conviction.

Can't wait to read her book, have pre ordered.

Actually yeah you're right, he's been hounded about this, maybe because he doesn't pull any punches in what he says. It's very sad because he's a hugely talented writer.
I do wonder how people will look back on this time, will people like JKR, Glinner etc. be acknowledged properly for the good they have done? I suppose it's not much comfort right now given the shit they have to deal with regularly...
Meanwhile the people who supported this shit, or looked away will just slink off into the shadows and pretend it's nothing to do with them.
