Bone density in girls with anorexia on woman's hour

Really interesting and important piece on woman's hour exploring if girls with anorexia should be given oestrogen when in recovery to support their bone development.

It's postulated as part of bio identical hrt, cyclically. Just the start of the ideas around this but part of a wider discussion about bone health in women.

There are of course implications, which weren't mentioned, in relation to girls who seek puberty blockers for "gender dysphoria." Many professionals have observed that the two mental health conditions go hand in hand with the former being championed more by many HCPs (ref Prof Michele Moore.)

The dr wrote in to ask for this to be discussed. I'm glad it has some attention, especially following Hadley's excellent and devastating piece on anorexia.

I have a friend who has been diagnosed with osteoporosis in her forties after going through the menopause in her twenties. When sexism, misogyny and homophobia make young women and girls feel that their inner life is somehow incompatible with their biological sex and they 'choose' early menopause, they need to be aware that they are signing up to premature ageing. My friend is in permanent pain from an injury that won't heal; she's had to give up most of her hobbies as they are too risky; she can't carry stuff or do everyday slightly strenuous tasks; she can't go to outdoor concerts or sporting events because being crushed or pushed could give her a life-changing injury; she can't risk going out when it is icy or snowy. Women being sold an image that they're going to end up passing as a buff bodybuilder need to know that they could actually end up with the lifestyle of a frail 90 year-old.

@EsmaCannonball that's a terrifying post.
