FFS, indeed.

How the hell can a film erase someone's identity? What a load of bollox. Do they not see that banning films/ books etc makes them the oppressors rather than the oppressed? If you don't like it don't go and watch it. Isn't that what they tell us about drag queen story time?

MrsFButton · 06/06/2023 18:29

What the heck do they think they're gaining here apart from repeated publicity for a film that is freely available on YouTube and an ever-growing reputation for stifling free speech?

I'm guessing that, as they see it, they don't want to see such discussions to be "normalised". So the GC position should be outside the bounds of what a "decent person" can advocate for.

It's a sleazy tactic, but that doesn't mean they haven't had some success with it.

WickedSerious · 06/06/2023 18:58

Same lily livered bullshit,different day.

Agreed - stopping the film is a win on many levels: first it keeps these ideas off the "education sector playing field", second they can threaten and scare the film goers (which I think many of them enjoy), third it builds their tribe and their emotion and loyalty to the cause.....

Cowards.

PorcelinaV · 06/06/2023 19:12

With the "erasing trans identities" stuff, it's all rather cowardly imo.

You don't see religious people try to get out of debate by saying, "you're denying my identity as having been born again!".

But for some reason, trans activists want to make a big deal out of someone disagreeing with their belief system. They need to explain why it's wrong to disagree with someone's self-concept of themselves, or they should be heavily mocked for this nonsense.

spiderplantparty · 06/06/2023 19:28

I agree. Cowards. They should make it a condition of matriculation next year that everyone holds up freedom of speech and any breaches of this could result in them not being allowed to complete that year at Uni or to graduate.

nilsmousehammer · 06/06/2023 21:34

Oh look, it's yet more overprivileged whining.

maltravers · 06/06/2023 23:48

I think universities should introduce a mandatory module on freedom of speech that everyone has to take and pass in their first term.

Circumferences · 06/06/2023 23:54

People who adhere to the mantra "transwomen are women" are the only ones erasing other's identities.
Virtually all TRA complaints are DARVO in the extreme.

I think universities should introduce a mandatory module on freedom of speech that everyone has to take and pass in their first term.

I would broaden that say to a module on critical thinking in which students have to engage with evidence and provide such for their arguments. And they have to learn to deal with concepts such as free speech and the fact that other people have opinions with which they might not agree but have to allow people to voice them.
