An Aussie labour lobbyist I think you’d call him on Twitter has posted excerpts from this book including this chart. I thought perhaps the wise women on this topic might know more about the book and author. The Twitter guy is using it to say people are obviously not rational to be concerned about men identifying as women when there are more women id’ing as men. He hasn’t thought too deeply about it clearly as he doesn’t want to think anything that contradicts his approved thoughts.

Is there a link to the excerpts?

Jean Twenge was on Meghan Daum’s Unspeakable podcast recently to talk about her work and this book. It was an interesting conversation and worth a listen.

How bizarre. The graph shows 18-26 year olds. We all know there is a problem with the increase in young women identifying as trans men - god knows, we've talked about it enough. Abigail Shrier wrote a whole book about it.

I suggest he looks at the graph comparing numbers of middle-aged men identifying as women, and vice versa. Then he could go away and have a little think about what it shows, and then reflect on why women might be concerned about it.

I would like a big study on Years 7-13 in the U.K. regarding females. By year 13 there’s a lot more girls going back to being girls again, in my experience. I think 26 in quite old for women still be saying they are men.

What’s funny is many on us would say we’re gender non conforming so would be included on the graph.

Obviously the figures for girls and young women under 26 are hugely influenced by their attempt to escape from misogyny and porn culture and most detransition as they get into their 20s. Perhaps you could ask him why the number of older women transitioning to male is so tiny compared to middle-aged men. Ask him about autogynephilia.

Justme56 · 28/05/2023 16:56

It doesn’t matter on numbers. One male in a race against females is going to have a much greater impact on the result than four females racing against men. It is not a symmetrical issue.

I've come across Jean Twenge a lot, in a similar vein to Jonathan Haidt. I would love to read more articles/papers by her or hear her on podcasts. I kept seeing her referenced when I was studying and found it nigh impossible to find the original sources. She is looking at a very important area(s) that few other people are, these are urgent enquiries so I hope she develops a higher profile

Twenge's book, iGen, was really interesting. It's a shame it's so heavily US focused but, where they go, we follow, so it's still a useful read.

Thanks all - sorry I have a sick clingy 1 year old so haven’t come back to this! I won’t be asking him anything as I have family in the us who would see it and attack me for daring to be so violently oppressive as to comment in a civilised fashion on a lobbyists Twitter unfortunately. It’s pretty depressing.
