50 years of Olivia, the lesbian cruise company (only there's a hitch)

In catering to LGBTQ+ women more broadly, its guests have included transgender women, non-binary people and even heterosexual women. “Olivia, as a brand, as a company, is so strongly about the female experience. So, however you feel you fit into that, you belong.”

I was a bit sad to read that and wonder if that cheery inclusive statement is from an ideological belief, economic necessity or fear of being cancelled.

Love the way it says "even heterosexual women" as though they are more radically different to lesbians than transgender women and non-binary people.

The Olivia brand, which was launched in 1973 as a radical women’s record label, celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.

I wonder how many of the women involved in setting up Olivia Records in 1973 would ever have imagined it would be surviving as a luxury holiday company!

‘I stood there with my mouth open. It was a utopia’: 50 years of Olivia, the lesbian cruise company

The company, which began as a record label, beat the odds to offer a space where women could ‘come out and be themselves’

Even heterosexual women! Not 'Even men'...

Rightsraptor · 24/05/2023 20:45

"The female experience". What is that, exactly?

alabastercodefier · 24/05/2023 21:07

I'll bet it was fabulous in 1993.

Ramblingnamechanger · 24/05/2023 23:28

The identifiers were there way back then

IwantToRetire · 25/05/2023 00:14

What happened in 1993?!

I read this article too and thought how nice, a lesbian cruise company celebrating 50 years. How nice, a story centring lesbians. Then… I wonder if those lesbians include TW? I wasn’t wondering for long.

Then I realised - the article wouldn’t have been printed in the Guardian if TW weren’t included. And no doubt the company would have been cancelled long ago!

And yes, the ‘even heterosexual women’ line made me wince.

BluebellBlueballs · 25/05/2023 12:18

So its now just a regular cruise company

Backstreets · 26/05/2023 07:50

Selling out sisters for a profit. What a way to tarnish a legacy.

literalviolence · 26/05/2023 08:16

Well it's not a lesbian cruise company now is it? They removed positive discrimination and think that's something to be proud of. It's not.

Redebs · 26/05/2023 08:27

Can you imagine the men in lipstick desperate to burst the cotton ceiling? Ugh!
Bet it will be solely men with gender dysphoria now. That's going to really annoy them! 🤣🤣🤣

This lot & the HER app both deserve to go the same way.

What happened in 1993?!

Everything was better then.

Everything was better then.

Funny thing I didn't think so at the time, but clearly yes!
