Sir Ed said: "The truth is, Mary, the vast majority of people whose biological sex is a woman when they were birthed - they feel they're women. "They feel they're gendered the same as at birth but there is a very small number of people who don't feel like that, and the law has recognised them for over 20 years now."
He added: "There's a small number of people who, actually, they have a tough time. They're harassed, they're discriminated against; real, serious mental health issues, and I think we need to debate this...with a bit more maturity and a bit more compassion."
Pressed further by LBC's Nick Ferrari on whether women can in fact have a penis, Sir Ed responded: "Quite clearly."

And evertime a politician says something like this, contact them with difficult questions, ranting in a MN bubble does very little. And I maintain, it is a bubble, this is very low down on most voters lists.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 24/05/2023 08:51

Exactly - the people who are happy for trans identifying males to go into female spaces usually understand that they have had their penis removed, which they think makes them safe to be with.

Now Ed has confirmed that they very much won't (necessarily) have had any surgery.

That information changes people's views. We already know that and as more information comes out, it will change them even more.

Plus it's such a ridiculous and illogical point of view, and so easy to attack, that questioning the LibDems on it is what will happen, time after time.

To all the posters ranting about this, have you actually emailed the Ed Davey about this?
I have.
Here's his email address - [email protected]
Btw, don't expect anything constructive back, but they need to know the weight of feeling behind this and how angry and scared women are. TWAW politicians talk about safeguards, but what are they?
If a transwoman is arrested would a women police officer have to do the body search ?
Could a women still get a smear if she didn't let a transwoman do it?
Would a rape victim be forced to refer to her rapist it court as 'she'? Although its absolutely laughable that a rape victim would even get to court never mind see a conviction.
Will more and more sports women be beaten in competitions by transwoman?
Etc, etc, etc.

Do as you want. I’m disinclined to consider views of posters who go on about ‘ranting women’. Their views are low down on the advice stakes.

I’ve written to the Laura Anne Jones to say thank you for the question and that Drakeford’s misogyny is abhorrent.

We can all decide who to write to. As for a ‘bubble’ I’m pretty sure NS and Penny M felt it pop

Hopefully more of the same.

zibzibara · 24/05/2023 09:06

I might email him encouragement. The more he says this nonsense, the more people will peak.

RoyalCorgi · 24/05/2023 09:07

Rightsraptor · 24/05/2023 05:26

I don't see this as an 'is this in the top 5 of voters' issues?' matter at all. I see it as a measure of sanity.

If party leaders started saying the earth was flat, or there's a 1% chance of the earth being flat or whatever, I'd be thinking 'are they bonkers? And do I want to vote for such idiots?' Because they'll definitely have other insane ideas besides that one.

Exactly. However wonderful their other policies are, who wants to vote for someone who believes obvious nonsense?

As always with politicians, I wonder whether Davey really believes what he says, or just says it because it's fashionable and he can't be bothered to think through the consequences.

Helleofabore · 24/05/2023 09:13

If you cannot trust a politician’s answer on the question of ‘what is a woman’, what can you trust them on?

All this question is doing is enabling politicians to show their ability to be honest in the face of anticipated ‘cancellation’ and hostility. If they cannot hold the line by answering this with transparency and truth, they are showing they are willing to lie to win votes and to appease lobbyists.

TodayInahurry · 24/05/2023 09:16

I won’t vote for any politician or party who comes out with this rubbish

It’s more men’s feeling first. Women should not be heard

Some women say the same and go on about ranting, or other slurs. It’s easy to see men are prioritised.

borntobequiet · 24/05/2023 09:31

Hagosaurus · 24/05/2023 06:13

I think the main impact with most voters comes when they see the consequences, as with Isla and her pink leggings. I strongly suspect that without that um revealing picture, that wouldn’t have been such a huge media story.

I thought of that very clear image too.

NotHavingIt · 24/05/2023 09:36

The Lib-Dems are so intent on being fair and reasonable that they seem to exist only at the level of ideas.

Beowulfa · 24/05/2023 09:36

So embarrassed that I voted LibDem when I was young.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 24/05/2023 09:37

Edge, yes, I was thinking exactly that. Rationally, Raptor’s point is exactly right, but in a world where nearly all politicians say that men can be women, it’s routinely reported as normal in the media, and kids are taught that in school, lots of people won’t question it

This is one of the main problems with legal sex self ID for me.

NotHavingIt · 24/05/2023 09:41

Kendodd · 24/05/2023 08:50

And evertime a politician says something like this, contact them with difficult questions, ranting in a MN bubble does very little. And I maintain, it is a bubble, this is very low down on most voters lists.

I see it more as an exchange of ideas and persepctives than a rant, myself.

It may well be low down on people's list of concerns, but that is because even now most people have little awareness of the full reality and implications of gender theory; but such cultural issues are becoming increasingly important and simply dismissing them as trivial is foolish, in my view.

Going forward i think people will be looking not just for what a party says it is going to do on wages and fuel bills, but on what kind of vision they propose, and what kind of values they espouse.

honestly though, I’m not sure it makes any difference, when I wrote I got a pretty standard reply, and when I questioned it, I got a cut and paste version of the same reply (ie all the same paragraphs, but in a different order. I don’t expect it ever gets as far as a real person, certainly nobody in leadership. Same with writing to Kier Starmer. Someone said physical letters stand a better chance of getting through, but who knows

i think the best approach is to support groups like Sex Matters to try to make sure they have resources to raise this

The Lib Dems really are the worst, and most captured, on this issue.

I would still like to be able to vote LibDem; the idea of compromise and a middle road approach to economics and between left/right appeals to me as very sensible.

Unfortunately the party has apparently gone completely deranged.

Yes, it's not really about a policy per se.

It reveals whether a politician is willing to lie about reality. Whether they will stutter and make an arse of themself when mouthing an absurdity.

They have some particularly unhinged TRAs.

WickedSerious · 24/05/2023 09:55

Is this part of their manifesto?

'Vote LibDem and every woman in the UK will be issued with a voucher for a free penis'

Terms and conditions will of course apply.

Not surprising really seeing who their biggest donor is.

I can see clearly now the peen has gone
I can see all testicles in my way
Gone are the dickheads that had me blind

It's gonna be a shite (shite)
Shite (shite) nonbinary day
It's gonna be a shite (shite)
Shite (shite) nonbinary day

Oh, yes I can make it now the pain is gone
All of the bad feelings have disappeared

Here is that progressive pride rainbow I've been praying for
It's gonna be a shite (shite)
Shite (shite) nonbinary day

look all around, there's nothing but blue skies
Look straight ahead, there's nothing but blue skies...

Edit to last line:

look all around, there's nothing but blue hair
Look straight ahead, there's nothing but blue hair…
