Sir Ed said: "The truth is, Mary, the vast majority of people whose biological sex is a woman when they were birthed - they feel they're women. "They feel they're gendered the same as at birth but there is a very small number of people who don't feel like that, and the law has recognised them for over 20 years now."
He added: "There's a small number of people who, actually, they have a tough time. They're harassed, they're discriminated against; real, serious mental health issues, and I think we need to debate this...with a bit more maturity and a bit more compassion."
Pressed further by LBC's Nick Ferrari on whether women can in fact have a penis, Sir Ed responded: "Quite clearly."

@Badgeringabout and Labour thinks no one is really bothered about the issue, more fool them.

Political parties do really extensive research on messaging and policy, actually I think this issue is low down on most voters lists and a lot of those voters will be on board with TWAW message anyway. Drill down into the detail of what this means and the consequences, and I expect most voters would change their mind and say TWANW. Even then, I very much doubt it would be on most voters top five most important issues.

FuriousAndFrustrated · 23/05/2023 23:53

Quite clearly Ed Davey is a bloody idiot.

You underestimate the effect that a gaffe can have. Remember that a bacon sandwich lost the 2015 GE.

OneMorePlant · 24/05/2023 00:51

Every woman should file a hatespeech complaint every time a politician says something dumb like this. Sex is a protected characteristic.

Rightsraptor · 24/05/2023 05:26

I don't see this as an 'is this in the top 5 of voters' issues?' matter at all. I see it as a measure of sanity.

If party leaders started saying the earth was flat, or there's a 1% chance of the earth being flat or whatever, I'd be thinking 'are they bonkers? And do I want to vote for such idiots?' Because they'll definitely have other insane ideas besides that one.

Hagosaurus · 24/05/2023 06:13

I think the main impact with most voters comes when they see the consequences, as with Isla and her pink leggings. I strongly suspect that without that um revealing picture, that wouldn’t have been such a huge media story.

EdgeOfACoin · 24/05/2023 06:19

My worry, though, is that it's all becoming normalised.

The more we see 'her penis' in reports about rapists, the more we see politicians declare that women can have penises and men can have cervices, the less jarring it becomes.

It really concerns me.

Hagosaurus · 24/05/2023 06:31

Edge, yes, I was thinking exactly that. Rationally, Raptor’s point is exactly right, but in a world where nearly all politicians say that men can be women, it’s routinely reported as normal in the media, and kids are taught that in school, lots of people won’t question it

nilsmousehammer · 24/05/2023 07:06

I'm increasingly thinking the time is here now to stop engaging in conversation to try and point out the logic, to reason, to explain - all of which legitimises this -

and just now go for no. Don't be so damn silly. That's ridiculous.

Women have been nice about this from the start, and look how it's been made use of.

nilsmousehammer · 24/05/2023 07:07

"you cowardly, gullible, misogynist twit" might also be appropriate in this particular case.

100% this

Exactly.

Labour and Lib Dems, plus their supporters use the top five line as a get out.

Hopefully it’ll get blow back as it did for NS

JjennyWren · 24/05/2023 07:22

Dear Ed "clearly" a woman cannot have a penis because clearly if she did she'd be a man. Sex is biology, not feelings, clearly.

Magpiestreasuretrove · 24/05/2023 07:30

Interestingly he uses ‘birthed’. That’s aligned with ‘assigned’. I would prefer ‘conceived’.

Born would do? What's with this 'they were birthed'? They were born, surely?

Yes, I'm at this point. I've tried engaging politely in conversation but got nowhere. Just say no. And hold your nose and vote for the party saying no.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 24/05/2023 07:37

EdgeOfACoin · 23/05/2023 16:45

Well, they're owning the ridiculousness of it.

The next question is: what makes someone a woman, if not biology?

A love of pink clothes and make-up? Giggling lots? An inability to park? A passion for cooking? A talent for dealing with toddlers?

What policies will the LibDems have to help women in a way that doesn't discriminate against women with penises?

I must be non binary. I don't own any pink clothes, rarely use make up, but I do love cooking.

Seriously, though, this is ridiculous.

Musomama1 · 24/05/2023 07:38

Ed Davey I'll wager many many women don't feel their 'gender', they are women because of reality.

So annoyed at this. I completely disagree with him as do most people.

When liberalism begins to lose it's mind.

Completely agree. I'm at this point too. It's just complete nonsense. I can't be arsed to get angry about it anymore either, just cold hard science and rolling my eyes. But I do think there's still a lot of people still just being 'peaked' for whom the reality of what this actually means is dawning. The tide is turning at long last, and everyone can see the emperor has no clothes, and is sporting a lovely lady penis.

JacquelinePot · 24/05/2023 07:47

Good, good. Let's get this all out in the open before the election

"There's a small number of people who, actually, they have a tough time. They're harassed, they're discriminated against; real, serious mental health issues, and I think we need to debate this...with a bit more maturity and a bit more compassion."

Dear Ed,
There is also a very, very much larger number of people who have a tough time because they are female. They are harassed and discriminated against and they do NOT have the option of identifying out of that. Could you kindly debate that with some of your maturity and compassion?

Because 'women may or may not have a penis, and please pretend you haven't noticed' is a really childish way of doing this sort of discussion.

Sums it up!
Wonder if Ed would be happy for those 'women with penises' to share a dorm with his teenage daughter or to stand beside her watching her undress in a swimming pool changing room. If that woman with a penis is 56 but identifies as 12 surely these women with penises can repeat high school. They must have missed alot of giggles in the girls toilets and that's not fair for them. If their pesky 6ft 4 male be penises body is always reacting excidedly to fluffy kittens, unicorns and RA-RA skirts then the old type of women, the female ones just need to get used to and #bekind to the big scary organ that keeps popping up in a friendly non threatening way and wanting to 'interact inclusively' with all the females. These cute, safe, harmless transwomen.......

Badgeringabout · 24/05/2023 08:02

Bring it on I say. Let's get these idiotic, cowardly woman haters to state their beliefs loud and proud and let's see what the voters ACTUALLY believe.

And I am amazed that any woman would contemplate voting for these creeps when they keep telling us who they are.

MagicSpring · 24/05/2023 08:16

I don’t see him as a cowardly woman hater at all. I think he’s a man with a massive naive blind spot about just how vile some men/males are to women, and how that affects so many women beyond the direct sufferers.

SunnyEgg · 24/05/2023 08:17

Yep finally it’s out there

So many posters telling us it wasn’t the case and to vote for them anyway

Much rather clarity on their beliefs

Kendodd · 24/05/2023 08:47

To all the posters ranting about this, have you actually emailed the Ed Davey about this?
I have.
Here's his email address - [email protected]
Btw, don't expect anything constructive back, but they need to know the weight of feeling behind this and how angry and scared women are. TWAW politicians talk about safeguards, but what are they?
If a transwoman is arrested would a women police officer have to do the body search ?
Could a women still get a smear if she didn't let a transwoman do it?
Would a rape victim be forced to refer to her rapist it court as 'she'? Although its absolutely laughable that a rape victim would even get to court never mind see a conviction.
Will more and more sports women be beaten in competitions by transwoman?
Etc, etc, etc.
