Victor Madrigal-Borloz's (UN) verdict on the UK: 'Keep calm and respect diversity'

ArabeIIaScott · 12/05/2023 09:04

I'm going to give Mr Madrigal-Borloz the benefit of the doubt, and presume he was trying to make a gentle joke on UK culture with his 'Keep calm' headline, rather than deliberately offend women.

Anyway:

https://www.ohchr.org/en/press-releases/2023/05/uk-keep-calm-and-respect-diversity-says-un-expert

“I am deeply concerned about increased bias-motivated incidents of harassment, threats, and violence against LGBT people, including a rampant surge in hate crimes in the UK,” said Victor Madrigal-Borloz, the UN Independent Expert on protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, who visited the UK from 24 April to 5 May 2023. “All of this is attributed – by a wide range of stakeholders – to the toxic nature of the public debate surrounding sexual orientation and gender identity,” he said.
...

'toxic', eh?

'current initiatives risk erosion of achievements in comprehensive sex education,'

  • presumably by this he means recent moves to question whether it's a good thing to teach children about fisting?
...

'The expert also took issue with recent advice by the UK Equalities and Human Rights Commission to the UK Government that promoted the reduction in human rights protections for trans persons with legal recognition of their gender. “These actions were admittedly with the objective of withdrawing trans women from legal protections to which they are entitled under the Equality Act,” Madrigal Borloz said.'

Well, that's a wilful misrepresentation if ever I read one.

'“Politicians must carry out evidence-based evaluations, free from stigma and preconception,” Madrigal-Borloz said.'

Cheeky fucker.

UK: Keep calm and respect diversity, says UN expert

LONDON (11 May 2023) – Abusive rhetoric by politicians, the media and social commentators has trickled down to produce increasingly abusive and hateful speech against LGBT persons in the United Kingdom (UK), the UN independent expert on sexual orientat...

Crikey, check this out:

'Representatives of political parties in Northern Ireland informed the Independent Expert that the detention of trans persons (especially trans women) has been one of the most complex issues in public discussions about trans persons’ rights. Yet they also observed that if trans persons are actually consulted on what is best for them, on a case-by-case basis, then risk can be adequately assessed for that individual. One of the political representatives informed the Independent Expert: “that kind of rationality seems to have evaporated. Yet obviously in detention no one is being set loose to harm others without supervision.”'

'if trans persons are actually consulted on what is best for them' - aye, fuck the women who may have something to say on Isla being chucked in Cornton Vale, eh?! What we need to focus on is what's best for Isla!

Rationality has evaporated, this is true. Especially as the last sentence implies people are being set loose to harm others under supervision, but I assume that's poor grammar rather than a gladatorial circus kind of affair.

Final para:

'It is telling that, during the visit, the current environment was uniformly described as toxic by stakeholders across the board, without exception, all of those who he met declared themselves unable to suggest a winning formula for making inroads in a situation that has been driven to a state of such acrimony. Yet, it is the very British people who have for decades inspired the world to know what to do in such situations of confusion: keep calm. Examine the evidence. The evidence shows that there is nothing to fear in the existence of LGBT persons, and much to celebrate in the diversity that they bring to our common humanity. Keep calm. Examine the evidence. Respect Diversity.'

Respect our fucking sex, Victor. And fuck off.

Arabella, another case of the tail wagging the dog. Of course rapists etc will want to be incarcerated with women. A captive pool for predation and no risk of being beaten up

There is a whole big section on education and schools.

'efforts to exclude transgender children from so-called “single-sex spaces”, from sports activities, and potentially from physical education programs in schools were also flagged as potentially damaging to trans children'

'The Independent Expert, along with other Special Procedures mandate holders, recently published a compendium of international standards on comprehensive sexuality education, which one NHRI in the UK informed the Independent Expert during his visit was very helpful to detoxify discourse in relation to RSE and health education in UK schools, which are self-governing on these issues'

👀

Did he define exactly what he means when he talks about 'transgender children'?

Does he mean children who don't conform to the gender stereotypes for their sex? Or children who are distressed by the changes of puberty and think they can opt out of them (or into the changes of the opposite sex). Or a child who appears to be repelled by their own genitalia (which could mean that they are being sexually abused). Or an adolescent who is same-sex attracted and due to internalised homophobia thinks that they would be better off being the opposite sex?

People like him never explain what they think makes a child 'trans' or 'transgender'.

littlbrowndog · 12/05/2023 14:21

It’s all such utter and total tripe from him

blah blah blah diversity blah blah inclusion blah blah toxic blah blah

he needs to look at himself in the mirror and spout them ridiculous words to himself and see how bonkers it sounds

Everything in this report should be read as ‘sponsored by Arcus’

So-called 'transgender children' (what's a transgender child, Victor?) aren't excluded from single-sex spaces or sports activities. They're excluded from single-sex spaces and sports activities which are for children of the opposite sex. Just the same as every other member of their sex.

Not as far as I can see, no. Definitions notably lacking!

I find the language usage a bit odd, very varied throughout the document, but I am guessing that is because much of it is not his own - I presume he is for the most part regurgitating the lines he's been fed.

IwantToRetire · 12/05/2023 16:27

What a shame this is a new thread as those this is somehow an isolated event.

Nice as it is to have FWR to let off steam about individuals, the real insult is that this is his response after having met representatives of both LGB and women's rights groups.

Both groups have had links to their reports posted and looked into how someone gets appointed etc.

So yes this individual has written this report, but the actual issue is that he was seen to be an appropriate appointment.

And as said on the existing thread his post is coming up for new applications so the bigger issue is how to make sure the UN doesn't repeat appointing someone with a personal agenda.

ArabeIIaScott · 12/05/2023 16:31

We've been discussing this man on here for a few years, now. There will be many threads on him.

Do feel free to link to the other threads on here if you feel they need pointing to.

Throughout the report the Independent Expert makes vague references to “evidence” without citations. At the same time he makes no mention of evidence that was given to him during his visit

Oof.

The representatives of Sex Matters, Fair Play for Women, Safe Schools Alliance and Labour Women’s Declaration asked him to take a group photograph at the end of our meeting, as he did with other civil-society groups. He refused, accusing us of having been personally abusive towards him on social media. We do not know what he was referring to, and he did not tell us

FFS, is he 12?

That report is dated 5th May - the last day of Victor’s visit.

Victor must have been a very busy bunny to fit in all those meetings AND have his report finalised by the last day of his trip.

Or option (b) Victor didn’t need to add in any actual evidence because the report was pretty much prewritten.

I'd also question the appropriation of one of our most famous wartime pitches to the public. If the UK, a largely white country, did this to another country there would be outrage. He should apologise for this.

Massively missing the point, but "Keep calm and carry on" wasn't really a thing until the 2000s. There was a wartime draft poster but it was barely distributed and certainly didn't attract public attention at the time.

Amusing, but such full-on nonsense will cause people to question the value of organisations like the UN. One person cannot represent the whole of one organisation and I'm sure it's not a monolith, but at the same time the UN as an organisation needs to give its head a wobble.

I take it you haven't seen the gender ideology crap UN Women has been putting out?

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 13/05/2023 12:36

the 'respect diversity' people never want to talk about anything real do they?

they never want to talk about women locked up in prison with rapists, about sterilised children, about women and children assaulted by men in women's toilets, about women subjected to voyeurism by men in women's changing rooms, about women feeling unable to participate in their own sports, about prizes intended to boost visibility and recognition of women being given to men.

fuck me, it's all such bullshit.

ResisterRex · 13/05/2023 12:42

I now wonder if I have a hazy memory of that poster being rediscovered. But anyway, it is part of our culture (it was and remains immensely popular), and I'd think it a safe bet this kind of mocking and appropriation would not be acceptable if we did it.

But why do it? Isn't he supposed to have a serious job? That and the date of drafting on the report suggest he regards it as a joke.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 13/05/2023 12:47

If all you've got is evidence free bollocks you've gotta spin it, innit?

PorcelinaV · 14/05/2023 13:48

Even if statistics are accurate, and you have increasing "hate incidents" or hate crimes, and it's genuinely linked to press coverage of the transgender debate, that doesn't show there is something wrong with the kind of debate going on.

For that, you would need to actually look at examples and make a case.
