was coming on to say just this - yes there was a study on submariners. It wasn't just about physical attributes but psychological balance & co-operative bahaviour IIRC. No idea of the reference - sorry

Women’s oxygen capacity is smaller than men, for the same weight woman and man I think. So more efficient use of resources.
