Nice little article, talks about the sex of the owner or maker, turns out it was a woman. Who knew that DNA could be an absolute marker of sex.

😲

RhinestoneCowgirl · 05/05/2023 15:07

"the technique could shed light on prehistoric social roles and division of labour between the sexes" not between the genders i notice...

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 05/05/2023 15:09

But I thought it was literally impossible to know if a person is a man or a woman? Shock

EpicChaos · 05/05/2023 15:19

Any clue as to what pronouns the person used in life? That would be most important, wouldn't it?!
lol

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/05/2023 15:21

Someone's taking the piss because the picture looks like a cock and balls on a strand of DNA.

IcakethereforeIam · 05/05/2023 15:23

I did wonder why the necklace looked like a double helix.

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/05/2023 15:24

Besides, wearing pretty jewelry and having female DNA merely means it was a cis troglodyte. <sarcastic>

Helleofabore · 05/05/2023 17:06

I agree someone was taking the piss. Maybe the artefact was authentic, but the illustration... maybe not so....

StephanieSuperpowers · 05/05/2023 17:07

They used the "w" word. So embarrassed for them.

SalaDaeng · 05/05/2023 17:47

Surely someone is playing a trick? That necklace looks nothing like any artifact I have ever seen. What is the double helix made of?

ChazNWave · 05/05/2023 17:56

mobile.reuters.com/news/picture/the-pendant-is-20000-years-old-ancient-d-idUSKBN2WU1A0 this shows the pierced elk tooth.

The illustration in the guardian article is very much artistic licence .

Well that looks nothing like the artist's representation and to add the double helix. Hmmmmmm. Interesting.

Deoxyribonucleic acid? AKA adenine, thymine, guanine, cytosine.

SalaDaeng · 05/05/2023 18:15

Brilliant! I walked straight into that one. Grin
Seriously though - in the picture it has a slightly plastic look to it.
Maybe I am being unkind.

BoredOfThisMansWorld · 05/05/2023 18:16

I can't work out if this is horribly transphobic or perhaps not if the necklace signifies "woman" regardless, the same way lipstick and pink power suits do? Be interesting to see if the word "gender" gets edited in at some point.

SalaDaeng · 05/05/2023 18:17

Oh. Silly me. Of course it is just a drawing and it is meant to look like a double helix. I need to go and make food. My brain is clearly in need of nutrients.

SalaDaeng · 05/05/2023 19:19

We are having garlic and pepper pork and rice. DH's favourite.

SalaDaeng · 05/05/2023 19:27

But thank you.

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/05/2023 20:01

I'm coming to yours for dinner @SalaDaeng

SalaDaeng · 05/05/2023 20:09

It is so easy.
Pork loin chops, thin, no bones.
Lots of fresh garlic about 6 cloves for 4 chops
A dessert spoon of crushed pepper corns
Maggi seasoning.
Brown the chops
Chuck in the garlic and pepper, add a tablespoon of maggi.
Turn the heat down, put the lid on, leave it about an hour.
Serve with rice and and stir fried green veg.
Enjoy a glass of wine while it is cooking.

But surely no health professionals to assign sex in those days?

I suspect midwifery is actually the worlds oldest profession.
