Radio 4 survey on sex education in schools

With parent kind (apparently.)

It doesn't have a bbc logo on but I'm aware of a file in 4 programme coming up on this topic. So I've filled it in anon though there's an option to be contacted by email.

The survey asks if you've been informed about sex Ed in school and also if you're aware of inappropriate content.

Small bump. It is a little odd without the BBC logo, but it seems it could be useful. You don't have to give personal information.

Curious as to what Parent Kind’s position is on teaching trans issue in school (maybe they haven’t got one, maybe that’s the point of the survey). Does anyone know anything about them?

I had a quick look on their webpage where they listed recent issues they’ve been involved with. Sex education wasn’t included, even for their Welsh group. I’m sure most people are aware of the Welsh government’s move to include ‘sexuality education’ in the curriculum from age 3 (iirc), and to specifically prevent parents from opting their children out of these lessons. Would have thought this should already be on their agenda.

Done. Thanks for sharing.

I'm currently in the process of arranging access to view the materials at my children's schools. I have been concerned in general for a while but was prompted to do so after an RHSE lesson that my daughter recently told me about when I asked her to share if there was anything that made her uncomfortable.... Suffice to say I felt uncomfortable enough with what she told me that I have asked to see everything.

Summary version is that it involved doing a ranking of oppression, similar to Diane Abbott's letter in the Observer last week and for which she lost the Labour whip.

For any non-UK posters, losing the whip means she is no longer a Labour MP as far as parliament is concerned but will still represent her constituency as an Independent - kind of getting the sack but still needing to sort out all the issues you've been voted in for in your local area. Apologies if that's patronising but we have so many different cultures and countries here that stuff can sound like gobbledegook. If a prominent Labour MP has just lost her job over something, there is no way on earth children should be asked to do the same thing in their lessons at school.

Ps obviously I'll get to look at all the sex ed stuff too when I review everything.

Hope it goes well Bonfire.

I'm going to have to start all this with my sons school.

When I taught sex Ed in the 00's we always had a parents meeting and showed the videos.

The main people who came were parents who had EAL who needed more explanation about it all and were usually very religious. We often had to explain that it was better to be involved in lessons than being withdrawn and hearing second hand on the yard, but our sessions were straight forward reproduction, puberty and relationships including same sex. No one withdrew. We were transparent and always ready to answer qs.

Thanks @WarriorN I'm in a fortunate position with the secondary school where I had already started a dialogue with them about the sex ed stuff way before the government review announcement (last year). In fact they had already started an internal review of everything off the back of those discussions. The school has been great TBH. They are looking through what they teach in line with the guidance from Safe Schools Alliance and Transgender Trend. That's why I had been happy to be hands off until now but I spoke to them after the Diane Abbott style lesson (thankfully they agreed it was awful!) and I'm going to work with them on the full review.

Yes, I remember the previous approach where we got a choice to see a video and also got sent an overview of everything in advance. I'm not exactly sure when it changed and suddenly got hidden away. I'm glad that's being reversed.
