I disagree about expelling people. I don’t want to see individuals, especially young undergraduates, kicked out for this in however reprehensible I personally find their behaviour. The fault lies with the university culture. The leadership has shown themselves woefully ill-equipped to deal with this challenge and to promote freedom of conscience, expression and assembly as non-negotiable values.

It’s probably a good thing as it stops social contagion of terfness to the general population. There is enough out there already spreading fear and derision

Out of curiosity, Mishi, what would your stance be if it were exactly the other way around? So if a trans group made a film about trans rights and feminists turned out en masse twice to physically stop trans people from being allowed to watch it?
I admit it's a bit of a nonsensical question as its only ever trans activists stopping feminist meetings. I've never seen it the other way around.
But would you still think that would be fair?

The social contagion of women wanting rights. And a political movement so very afraid of those uppity women sharing information because they know their only hope is to depend on lies and ignorance . A population in happy deluded ignorance.

It's a bit sad really. The information's already escaped.

Oh I'm not saying that should be the universities first stop. I'm not even saying the students can't protest. However having had the screening interrupted once it was on the university to explain that that wouldn't be tolerated a second time, that the students could protest but that they were not to prevent the screening going ahead. That if any students did stop the second protest going ahead the punishments to that would be x, y or z. With the most serious punishment being expulsion.

University in my day had a code of conduct of sorts, behaviour that was expected of their students in order to remain on their course. I would have been thrown out had I overstepped the line. But these days there is no bloody line at at all.

But the university did nothing.

@Boiledbeetle Ah OK - there should definitely be consequences.

IcakethereforeIam · 29/04/2023 16:12

Perhaps a warning first, the tras could be forgiven for thinking they'd get another pass, particularly as members of the faculty were also participating, but then kick 'em out. They can have their fees refunded as I'm feeling generous 😏

I'd hope of course that the expulsion option was reserved for actual expellable offenses.

But we have definitely gone too far the other way in universities. These effectively children are wielding a level of power that is not acceptable in a civilised society.

God i sound like my grandmother!

But it's only as you get older i think that one starts to realise why we have so many of the unwritten rules we have in order to achieve a democratic society. And today's youth, unless it is written down in 280 character chunks of information and explicitly explained to them that decent people don't do 'that', whatever that is at any given time, they have no idea of societal norms like previous generations.

It’s almost as if research from the University recognises there’s a difference between the sexes…
