Irish Eurovision band sack team member for saying a male rapist is not a woman

Ian Banham - the creative director for the Irish Eurovision Song has been sacked by the other band members because he wrote a tweet calling out the press for referring to a male rapist as a ‘she’.

The band have issued this statement:

Wild Youth is a band that stands for unity and kindness. Our song represents our beliefs as a band. We have cut all ties with lan Banham and will not have him on or near our team or Eurovison journey. We are so sorry for anyone offended by his comments.

They are in effect sacking their band mate and they defending a rapist’s right to be called she’ and they say they stand for ‘kindness’.
There is a backlash, I wonder how much support they will get for this.

When you realise you’d rather have Dustin the Turkey or Jedward…

I leave you all to go get some work done and I come back to A Cavern of Nick Caves, a vat of hummus and a book of poems that covers the leaving cert for the last twenty years.

that is one of the joys of Mumsnet! You never know when silly is going to happen!

One of the Nicks escaped onto a new thread after a poster, 👀 sigh, forgot to change their name back!

Boiledbeetle · 26/04/2023 21:57

So they have done a reaction interview/video to JKR tweeting about them but i can't find it again if anyone comes across it on Twitter!

RocketPanda · 26/04/2023 22:02

I'll send out the dogs to round up the errant Nick and get him back where he belongs. Can't have them wandering about singing at new mums and stressed survivors of raising teens.

Is it a musical reaction?

Alas no. It was a we're not bothered by that reaction whilst a look of oh fuck what have we done went across their faces. I've just had another trawl and i cannot find the blasted thing

It was on RTE News. The singer looked confident but the guys behind him, especially the two that look like they may be brothers, looked sick. I actually felt a bit sorry for them. They should just be having a fun couple of weeks enjoying the run up to the competition. It's a once in a lifetime experience for musicians of their level. Instead, some fucktard(s) on twitter dragged up the tweets of a man they've been working with and, realistically, put them in a no win situation.

They'd probably have been better off ignoring it, but we all know they could have been subject to a big TRA pile on if they'd done that. Sure it would have been nice if they hadn't acted as they did. But most people don't really know what's happening and could genuinely think that they should have cut contact with the 'transphobe.' I don't approve of the action they've taken but I think they are a victim of this stupid culture too and have had this experience marred because of it.

Just going to relive 15 year old me playing this over and over and over and over again. I still have the vinyl single.

"Do you remember the time Ireland had a dodgy band who defended rapists?"
"Yeah I know. And we were embarrassed by Dustin".

This is their legacy to be doomed to oblivion with this label forever.

I enjoyed Dustin. It's just that no-one else shared our sense of humour. They just thought we were taking the piss in a mean way rather than in an affectionate way.

ArcaneWireless · 26/04/2023 23:19

I’m sure that Dustin would be able to tell the difference between a girl turkey and a boy turkey.

It is very far from a return to pre Christian Ireland. I suspect the Druidic Irish were not into removing healthy body parts, and preventing the normal healthy development of their children (as is part of this imported ideology). Now, that really is savage. And the latest imported practice into Ireland.

It was an 85% male Dail which imported and imposed (on the sly) a new misogynistic, and homophobic, ideological set of beliefs from the US via Yogyakarta. Of all the ideologies we had to import it had to be this anti science, flat earther harmful tripe. Which results in most harm to women and children.

Although the origins of St Patrick are disputed, he was from a Romanised family.

CreationNat1on · 26/04/2023 23:27

What absolute goons, the goonish, aimless grinning, followed by the automatic awkward removal of smiles from their faces, followed by diversion tactics.

They fired a man, cancelled him, made a public announcement about it, and refused to elaborate or justify their position, once there was backlash.

Why on earth does that inarticulate mumbler think that Irish women should get behind him? He seems to think he just automatically deserves it. Well, Irish women deserve better than that sort of Irish man. He appears to think more about a violent rapist than women. I'm not sure we've ever had such obvious gobsh*tes representing us in the Eurovision before.

LongAway · 26/04/2023 23:42

Some woman somewhere may have a story on the Mumbler.

Its a pity it wasn't a journalist that would have asked them if they will be campaigning for Zara Jade to be sent to a womens prison

Maybe WildYouth can do a cover of 'My lovely horse' featuring Father Jack.

Yeah it's finally popping up all over the place now!

I doubt this will the last time they get asked the question. I wonder if they will be spending tomorrow morning being briefed on what the correct answer should be if any pesky journalist tries to go off script.
