Oxford students call for feminist Kathleen Stock to be no-platformed at Union over trans views

Oxford University students have called for the gender-critical feminist Kathleen Stock to be no-platformed in “solidarity with the trans community”.

The university’s LGBTQ+ society has urged the Oxford Union to rescind its “misguided” invitation to the academic, who is scheduled to speak about her views on gender identity theory at the end of May.

In a statement posted on social media, the LGBTQ+ society said it was “dismayed and appalled” that the historic debating society had “decided to platform the transphobic and trans exclusionary speaker Kathleen Stock”.
It accused the union of “disregarding the welfare of its LGBTQ+ members under the guise of free speech”.

I almost didn't post this thinking oh we've heard all this before.

And then I thought no. They shouldn't think that they can get away with this silencing of women, and we need to shine a light on it.

PS that's what my user name is about. not retiring from work, but wanting to retire from this endless attack on women's rights. But realise my thinking I could is a privilege some women dont have so the least I can do is let them know they aren't being ignored.

Do you think each new intake of students just means it is never going to end?

Did Kathleen Stock send the death threat ?

no?

thought not

You condone violent threats against LGBT people?

I am pretty sure Roses was referring to the letter to the Telegraph, not the anonymous letter to the LGBTQ++ president. I am sure we all would agree the latter is both cowardly, inappropriate and unnecessary.

Hateful diatribes against LGBT people isn't "intellectual debate". It's hate which increases the risk of violence.

Kathleen Stock has NEVER spoken or written a 'hateful diatribe' against LGBT people. She IS an lesbian herself! She doesn't believe that people can change sex or that men should be allowed to access women's spaces, play women's sports or take places that are set aside for women. That isn't hate, it's feminism and fairness.

What's really worrying is that you're supposed to be really intelligent to go to Oxford and the idiots trying to ban intellectual debate are just mindless sheep. Is this really the best and brightest that Britain has to offer nowadays? I bunch of groupthinking morons?

In what way is he the best and brightest Britain has to offer?
He's an international student from the middle east. He's not an offering of Britain in any way. His offering is one of his own personal ignorance and lies, which in his insularity and arrogance he assumes should be taken seriously but it's clear very few are taking up his offer, and only the similarly mistaken.

Huh? The letter isn't making violent threats against anyone. It does, however, condemn the bullying, abuse and harassment of those who wish Kathleen Stock to address the Oxford Union. Do you also condemn that behaviour?

It's been reported to the police, hopefully they will investigate and press charges.

I have a feeling it wasn't sent by a gay or trans person.

There's no actual proof that he didn't send it himself in an effort to make it look less like this sort of behaviour is all coming from his own side.

I love the response from Kathleen Stock though.

"Yes, it's horrible to receive death threats, isn't it? Now you're on the receiving end of one, perhaps it's time to reflect on how you and your friends have inflamed the situation and normalised this type of behaviour."

Or in other words, "If you can't take the heat, don't deliberately set the fucking kitchen on fire. Now grab this fire extinguisher and help fix the mess you made."

this Thread now includes references to two different letters:

  1. a letter to the Telegraph by Oxford students supporting free speech and
  2. a letter reported by the head of the LGBTQ+ society which includes threats of harm if the society continues to oppose KS’s invitation to speak
Cherryblossoms85 · 22/05/2023 15:33

Irene Tracy is a lovely lady, but she is extremely woke on these issues. I don't know her well, but it's not really possible to have a conversation with her in which she doesn't somewhat shut you down on it. I skirted around it a bit to see what her position was, she is very firmly in the "be kind" camp and views any questions as right wing.

Kathleen stock is a lesbian.

It is entirely right that any threats are reported to the police.

Yes but @RoseslnTheHospital was clearly referring to the one written by the students. No one knows who wrote the other one because it was anonymous.

Do these people not understand the implications of characterising things such as believing in free speech and not believing humans can change sex and believing that women should be allowed to have single sex rape counselling and sports as "right wing"?

If I were passionately left wing, I would not want the political left to be characterised as being batshit anti-women opposed to those things.

As Kathleen Stock is a lesbian and has had violent threats that you have not condemned, it’s reasonable to assume you condone violent threats against LGBT people.

RoseslnTheHospital · 22/05/2023 15:40

MerlinsLostMarbles never has a username been more appropriate.... you are so quick to look for an attack angle towards people you hate as a knee jerk reaction that you jump to the most absurd conclusions. FYI I was (clearly, obviously, unequivocally) referring to the support letter written by students support Dr Stock. I was ignoring your derailing stupid fishing expedition of a post and continuing the discussion.

Let it be said that every single female feminist poster that is a regular on these boards condemns every single death threat made to anyone. It doesn't actually need spelling out to the vast majority, but MerlinsLostMarbles, you seem to need it.

Cherryblossoms85 · 22/05/2023 15:59

@MargotBamborough I don't know. I was at a garden party and trying to make polite conversation and didn't want to make things awkward. That's how this has all arisen, the silent majority wanting to keep the peace. I think a lot of it is driven by the fact that students pay so much money, they're the customers, so colleges and the University want to pacify them and are probably terrified of law suits.

Good, death threats are unacceptable, I hope it is investigated

Kathleen Stock is a lesbian who has been subject to death threats

how do you feel about that?

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/05/21/oxford-university-students-intolerance-free-speech/

From 'A member of the Oxford Feminist Union'

'Oxford is full of very bright and ambitious young people, who want to be a future prime minister. Combined with the entitlement of many Oxford students, this is a dangerous mix. They will do anything to get there, and from today’s society, they have learned that “cancelling”, virtue signalling and silencing is the way to do it. They spend as much of their days searching for a person to “call out” or a cause to rally against, as they do in libraries.'

'These individuals have lost sight of reality, fuelled by the intense environment of the university, and their over-inflated sense of self-importance. They rule through fear and live in fear themselves, a torturous trap of their own design and maintenance. They are upheld however by the complicit masses - individuals wishing to avoid becoming targets themselves, and the immense power of social approval.'

'A collective sigh of relief was released across the city when academics wrote their letter in support of free speech. The university’s environment can make you feel like you’re the only one that’s sane, and this is intentional. Perhaps the letter will break the collective spell that lingers over the dreaming spires, and students will wake up to realise that they have nothing to fear and everything to gain from valuing discussion and debate, and more will become braver too.'

At Oxford students now live in fear - they think cancelling each other will help them get ahead

We need to stop living in fear and break the collective spell cast over the dreaming spires by an aggressive group of self-hating ideologues

Do you have any real examples of "hate" from Kathleen Stock?

So examples that you think clearly cross the line and can't reasonably be defended.

Kathleen Stock is LGBT people. So, I agree with this statement.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 22/05/2023 17:06

Do you have any inkling of how many death threats Kathleen Stock has received from trans activists?

If we were to post one death threat example per post for prominent U.K. gender critical women, we would fill up the thread many times over.

Inamuddle36 · 22/05/2023 17:32

CherryBlossom — I am disappointed to read this characterisation of the Vice Chancellor. I hoped she would be more in favour of free speech and open
