Oxford students call for feminist Kathleen Stock to be no-platformed at Union over trans views

Oxford University students have called for the gender-critical feminist Kathleen Stock to be no-platformed in “solidarity with the trans community”.

The university’s LGBTQ+ society has urged the Oxford Union to rescind its “misguided” invitation to the academic, who is scheduled to speak about her views on gender identity theory at the end of May.

In a statement posted on social media, the LGBTQ+ society said it was “dismayed and appalled” that the historic debating society had “decided to platform the transphobic and trans exclusionary speaker Kathleen Stock”.
It accused the union of “disregarding the welfare of its LGBTQ+ members under the guise of free speech”.

I almost didn't post this thinking oh we've heard all this before.

And then I thought no. They shouldn't think that they can get away with this silencing of women, and we need to shine a light on it.

PS that's what my user name is about. not retiring from work, but wanting to retire from this endless attack on women's rights. But realise my thinking I could is a privilege some women dont have so the least I can do is let them know they aren't being ignored.

Do you think each new intake of students just means it is never going to end?

You literally cannot win against these people. The leader of the LGBT society, who called for the deplatforming, is complaining that the Telegraph has named him in an article and has 'misgendered him'. The Telegraph refers to him with male pronouns. A quick look at his Twitter profile reveals that his pronoun preference is 'any', and all of his offical websites use 'he/him'. https://twitter.com/AddiHD02/status/1650623577513762824

Yes, perhaps if you say any pronouns are fine it's not surprising if a journalist opts to call you 'he'? And perhaps if you start a campaign against an academic and try to silence her the paper will want to report on that? I swear they just want to do what they like with zero consequences.

What, the Telegraph used his actual name? When talking about things that he’d actually said?

those bastards

What is even more amusing is that in the same thread a person states the ‘my boyfriend has been doxxed by the telegraph’.

Maybe I am assuming wrong, but as a ‘they/them’ how can they be a boyfriend? I thought it was all about not being a boy or a girl. It’s almost as if the partner knows exactly who they are!

I think the word that this misgendering swine is looking for is 'themfriend'.

How on earth do these illiterate, science denying dunderheads get into Oxford? When I was their age it was meant to be difficult to get in.

So you're in a debating society. You have the opportunity to debate someone whose views you passionately disagree with and think are objectively wrong. What's not to love?

You mean other than the fact that they will wipe the floor with you?

IcakethereforeIam · 22/05/2023 01:21

Wasn't sure where to put this or even whether to start another thread but the Royal Society of Chemistry have apparently called DocStock a 'bigot' in an published of 37 pages. In not one of those 37 pages have they produced or linked to any evidence of bigotry.

I've not seen the article, I'm going to look for it.

Here's a link to a tweet with a piece about it on GBNews with Andrew Doyle.

I did an impromptu revisit to the Oxford Union last summer and it was not possible to enter the premises without going through a very high security gate, so they should be able to keep unauthorised protesters out without incurring substantial extra security costs.
Those who want to debate for/against the motion will be expected to remain polite. That is the whole point of a debate. However one has to wonder what the arguments against Dr Stock's views will be, since 'gender identity ideology' does not hold up to any scrutiny, hence the 'no debate' tactic in the first place.

I would assume they want the debate cancelled so that nobody from the gender ideologue camp actually has to stand up and explain and defend their views in front of a supposedly very intelligent audience.

Quite. Their behaviour is very embarrassing.

The Sunday Times published an interview with the Vice Chancellor of Oxford, Prof Irene Tracey yesterday. While she didn’t offer her own assessment of Stock, she did talk about the importance of freedom of speech and the need for students to hear views that differ from their own. A sidebar article quotes one of the signatories of the letter to the Telegraph speaking even more forcefully (in favour of Stock). I think the professors speaking out and the university administrators need to have some public support and encouragement to push in favour of “inconvenient truths”. You can Google any of the professors to get the addresses if they’re colleges if you want to write to them. Or you can write to the Vice Chancellor at

There was a letter in the Daily Telegraph today, signed by students from lots of the colleges in support of the previous letter by academics in favour of free speech.

Those who want to silence free speech ‘do not speak for us’, say Oxford students

Students condemn the alleged abuse they received for inviting gender-critical feminist Prof Kathleen Stock to speak

They write:

“We are appalled to see the tarnishing of the reputation of the University of Oxford by the few individuals who seek to silence Professor Stock and punish the Union.
“The society was founded with the key aim of discussing ideas which some may find challenging, as was the University itself. It is not necessary to agree with Professor Stock’s views in order to recognise the dangerous precedent that would be set if ‘the last bastion of free speech’ could not stand firm at this moment.
“Our belief is that there is much to gain from hearing opposing views on important topics, and furthermore reject the notion that Professor Stock’s visit to the Union <a class="break-all" href="https://archive.is/o/UbkaU/www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/05/17/oxford-students-are-acting-like-ignorant-children/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">constitutes any real danger to members of the University or the public.”
“The Oxford Union is part of the city and the university’s heritage. Whilst recognising it is an imperfect organisation, we value it because we value free speech. It is free speech we sign to defend, as the lifeblood of universities, learning, and modern democracies. Those who aim to silence it do not speak for us.”

I have just written a post saying “hooray!” In response to the students’ letter and asking if the letter include students’ names and colleges. I received a reply saying the post would be hidden until it could be reviewed by MNHQ. I do not know why it needs to be reviewed so am attempting to write the same idea somewhat different to see if it gets beyond censors.
also wanted to call attention to the link in pp to essay written by an emeritus professor. He makes excellent points so the essay is well worth reading.

It's the archive link (which is embedded in the article, I couldn't remove it)

It triggers auto-hide. Should be fine once a mod sees it and checks it's okay.

Do you have any inkling of how many death threats Kathleen Stock has received from trans activists?

What's really worrying is that you're supposed to be really intelligent to go to Oxford and the idiots trying to ban intellectual debate are just mindless sheep. Is this really the best and brightest that Britain has to offer nowadays? I bunch of groupthinking morons?

Hateful diatribes against LGBT people isn't "intellectual debate". It's hate which increases the risk of violence.
