Has anyone else been forced to become Conservative after all of this?

Probably the wrong wording, but I'm curious - after always considering myself fairly left wing/ liberal and generally voting Labour (or tactically Lib Dem when I was in the SW), I no longer really consider them a valid option for me because of their gender views/ inability to take a view.

Has this happened to anyone else? Never thought I'd be a Tory, but now feel like I have no choice as this issue is so important to me.

This gender issue needs sorting out once and for all. I will vote for whichever party properly recognises and acknowledges the problems and offers laws and protections to all.

Those that continue to try and gaslight the public with 'most women don't have a penis' are either too stupid or too cowardly to run the country imo.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 22/04/2023 14:09

I live overseas and have been here just over 15 years so I can no longer vote. I'm actually pleased that this decision has been taken out of my hands! I'm a former Labour member, youth officer, intern.

ponderingsoul · 22/04/2023 14:09

thanks for all the replies, really interesting and will help me work out what the hell to do re voting. I suppose I am just so so disappointed/ alarmed by Labour's position/ lack of that I feel I have no good options. Left wing and gender critical = no party to vote for?!

No. I would find that absolutely ridiculous when Maria Caulfield, who wants to see abortion terms reduced, abd JRM and Peter Bone etc would like to see it abolished altogether. Give me a break.

Spiderywriting · 22/04/2023 14:10

No way I would ever vote Tory. Actually I don’t trust them either on self ID.

I live in Kensington which is at the top of the Labour hit list. If the parties can be arsed to come round my home to canvass - they didn’t bother last time, I will speak my mind!!

I will either spoil my ballot paper or vote for a GC independent if there is one.

sobeyondthehills · 22/04/2023 14:10

I am a floating voting, I have voted for the majority of the major parties at one election or another.

As it stands at the moment just on the trans issue
Tory - Been in for 13 years and my life has gotten much worse under them, knows what a woman is, because they would prefer them chained to a kitchen sink. Shit MP
Labour - is very confused about what a woman is, I don't like the leader anymore than I like the Tory leader. No idea about the local candidate
Lib Dem - Also seems confused on what a woman is, couldn't tell you who their leader is, seemingly excellent local candidate
Green Party - I am not sure what their views on women are, but I can probably guess, I like the lady who said men should have a curfew, I really like their leader. No idea on local candidate.

I might get a BNP/UKIP type person which is always fun, I would vote for Count Binhead, although I am not clear on his views on women's spaces and he also wont run in my area.

In a nutshell, I wont for the Tory party, regardless of their views on women, because I dont believe for a second they would actually do anything to help women, so they are more or less in the same camp for me as those who dont know what a woman is.

THIS

Another plus one on this.

Being a single issue voter is madness.

WessexWanderer · 22/04/2023 14:11

No. Even if I was prepared to cast my vote on a single issue, I wouldn't trust the Tories with it. Look at out they played to those worried about immigration, taking advantage of their fears and possibly prejudices. Far from doing anything positive, immigration has increased, asylum seekers are risking their lives in the Channel, they're being kept in poor standard accommodation, the processing time for claims is ridiculous, resulting in more expense to the taxpayer, some members of the public have turned on the RNLI of all people and I could go on. But they will continue to exploit the fears by muttering words about Rwanda and anything else that convinces people that voting for anyone else would result in the entire world coming to the UK.

I suspect gender is a similar strategy for them. They won't do much if anything to safeguard the safety and dignity of women and girls or prevent the damage done to young people. But they'll pop up every now and then to ask 'Can a woman have a penis' and hope that convinces women to vote for them. If anything it will be in their interest to allow the situation get worse while claiming they want to improve it.

I'm not trying to tar all Tories with this but I think as a party this is their strategy. I hope they are out at the next election and will vote accordingly. Having said that, I don't want Starmer in with a huge majority so he has to start listening to concerns. And if I get canvassed by any opposition party, I will raise this issue with them.

Spiderywriting · 22/04/2023 14:11

Greens are the worst party on women’s rights and pushed the TRA agenda in Scotland.

Rowthe · 22/04/2023 14:12

I will not vote Tory.

I wont say never, but I cant see myself voting for them at least for the next 10 years.

ChaToilLeam · 22/04/2023 14:13

I am politically homeless. They’re all absolutely unacceptable to me.

Irequireausername · 22/04/2023 14:13

Yes, I have

PopGoesTheProsecco · 22/04/2023 14:19

I fell in with a bad crowd at Uni and ended up as VC of the Conservative society.

Since then my politics have gone more Left, the older I get.

I could never ever vote Conservative again.

Satsumastocking · 22/04/2023 14:19

I've always voted Green, but this issue has put me off despite my agreement with their general ethos.
I wouldn't vote Labour and certainly not Tory. I agree that they might claim to know what a woman is, but don't care about us, plus they're probably thinking a woman has some obscure essence that makes them good to chain to kitchen sinks so they probably don't really define woman, as I would, in non-gender-essentialist terms.

That leaves me with the communists, which I really haven't considered. I can't imagine I'll vote for them, but I'll have a look at their policies at least.

Laladybird · 22/04/2023 14:21

Labour is committed to introducing self ID if they get into Government

xabia · 22/04/2023 14:24

Would definitely consider voting Tory for the first time. Former member of the Greens.

paulinesmithson · 22/04/2023 14:31

No? That's ridiculous, you seem to care more about preventing people from transition (which doesn't cause harm) than about having rights for poor and underpriviledged people. The Tories are ruining this country with their negligence for the environment and people and you don't really seem to care

Rosula · 22/04/2023 14:33

Is this issue really so important to you that you are prepared to continue to throw the disabled, poor and elderly to the wolves, sell off the health service, close your eyes to government corruption and illegality, throw the economy down the drain, and send vulnerable refugees - including women and children - to a highly unsafe destination? Seriously? If so, how do you live with yourself?

RufustheSpecuIatingreindeer · 22/04/2023 14:34

RunningUpThatMill · 22/04/2023 13:39

I couldn't agree more with this. I'm worried that people who usually vote Labour will vote for smaller parties to the left, meaning the Conservatives will remain in government.

I agree with you, I think this is going to happen

Slothtoes · 22/04/2023 14:34

No I don’t feel forced to vote Conservative. All of this gender identity politics has happened on their watch.
What have the Tories actually done to help women with the parliamentary majority that they have had for the past decade, to deserve my vote?

Fukuraptor · 22/04/2023 14:38

But transition does cause harm! Listen to the detransistioners.

xabia · 22/04/2023 14:40

It isn't just a single issue though. There are ramifications in all areas- education, sports, prisons, health...

NotHavingIt · 22/04/2023 14:40

I'm an ex Labour party member. for the last few elections ( local and national)I've been spoiling my ballot due to Labour/Lib Dem/Greens stance on
Gender Self Id. I live in a Labour stronghold - although because of that, because of no challenge and because of complacency - the local Labour party is corrupted and utterly incompetent - and the best thing for the city would be for the Labour council to be replaced.

Going forward I will vote for any candidate ( it matters not what badge or colour they wear) whose views on things most important to me align with my own, and who I feel has integrity. I have lost any tribal allegiance that I may once have had.

Floisme · 22/04/2023 14:41

Labour can get themselves out of this mess any time they choose, and I think they've just about enough time to do so and face down the reality denying tantrums before the general election.

Or they can dig themselves even deeper into craven stupidity and hope they can use moral blackmail on enough women to see them through.

It's entirely up to them. I think their decision will be very enlightening.

IfYouDontAsk · 22/04/2023 14:44

No, I’d rather spoil my ballot paper than vote Conservative. The Tories represent an individualistic, I’m-alright-Jack brand of politics that I find absolutely repulsive.
