She wasn’t agreeing with JK, she was saying she sympathises with anyone who’s been harassed.

Disappointing from her.

Baldieheid · 18/04/2023 16:12

What a w.imp

Theunamedcat · 18/04/2023 16:15

So she is sympathetic to anyone being harassed unless they are jkr?

BoredOfThisMansWorld · 18/04/2023 16:15

Zzzzzzzzz

Publishers are really weirdly desperate about this issue.

Blackandwhitehorse · 18/04/2023 16:40

I wish these people would not say anything at all unless they are prepared to stick to their guns. Just keep quiet if you can’t take the heat.

Menstrualcycledisplayteam · 18/04/2023 16:47

I'm GC and I bloody love Hadley Freeman's writing, but I'm not sure about her approach here. Reading the transcript, it didn't feel like the conversation turned naturally to JKR. It felt, not quite forced, but certainly led. If people want to "out" themselves as GC, then they should do so naturally and on their own terms IMO. People might consider that cowardly, but I can completely understand Blume being cautious. Who the hell wants to go through what JK has? I also think Hadley's shot herself in the foot - interviewees are likely to be on high alert for the JK question from now on.

oakleaffy · 18/04/2023 17:26

Wonder if Blume has been pre$$urised by execs because there is a film of one of her books coming out, and there has been a backlash against the eminently sensible and intelligent JKR?

oakleaffy · 18/04/2023 17:28

Plus there is a pic of Mulvaney , gob agape like a blow up doll, hand in hand with Blume.

Completely agree. Absolute turn~coatery.

MargotBamborough · 18/04/2023 17:30

I find the capture of the publishing industry really sad and shocking.

I'm quite sure that we will look back on this era as one in which very little great art (especially literature) was created because everyone's creative freedom was hampered by the threat of being cancelled for wrongthink.

I've always wanted to write but the idea of it just seems like a total minefield. Spending years of your life pouring your heart and soul into something only to be deplatformed because the shoutiest idiots on Twitter have decided that you're public enemy number one.

BlackRookInRainyWeather · 18/04/2023 17:32

I do wonder if publishing companies can’t make the connection between the good sales of TERF books and who buys all the other books in the world? Do they think TERF readers only read TERF books? Using TERF as shorthand here but don’t or can’t they see that gender critical women probably buy more books and read more than your average punter? Which is why we are so clever.

Agree, on all counts.

I do feel like Blume has been pressured to make this statement.

Disagree completely. Blume volunteered the line about loving JKR and being behind her 100%. She could have just said "Mmm, yes" or something similar but instead she leapt in with a very clear statement of support.

Lockheart · 18/04/2023 18:35

This isn't turn-coatery or her being a wimp. It is entirely possible to support someone when they are experiencing harassment while at the same time disagreeing with them on transgender issues.

Flowerly · 18/04/2023 18:41

Makes you realise how special and wonderful JKR is doesn't it?

I wish the people who "disagree with JK Rowling on transgender issues" had the balls to say what it is they disagree with though.

But I suppose saying you think male rapists should be housed in women's prisons and female rape survivors shouldn't have access to single sex support and female athletes shouldnt be entitled to fair competition sounds a lot less good than saying you "disagree with JK Rowling on transgender issues", doesn't it?

Terven women do seem to be rather well read and intelligent as a group.

JK is true to herself in that she isn't a turncoat.
She stands by her beliefs.

She has courage. She is brave.

It's women's spaces, sports and groups that are under threat , and I have personally been affected by this, a Trans woman in a women only space who made me and another woman deeply uneasy.

The Transwoman had been ousted from another 'Women's' group for showing a vulnerable woman porn on the Transwoman's phone.

The trans woman made uncomfortable comments that made the women feel uneasy.

One woman said she was '' Scared''.

No one minds if someone wants to dress as a woman, or put on wigs and makeup.. but it is quite another thing entering women only spaces.

People argue that Transwomen are 'Vulnerable'...in which case, have a Transwoman support group.

No one is denying support may be necessary, a trans woman in a women only space can feel threatening to some women, especially those who have been traumatised by males.

Flowerly · 18/04/2023 19:21

FFS. Why am I not remotely surprised at this?

GrammarTeacher · 18/04/2023 19:24

It's not a turn coat issue. Judy Blume is not and was not GC. This is all on Hadley Freeman and was a weird interview anyway.

OldCrone · 18/04/2023 20:09

Judy Blume is not and was not GC.

Isn't she? I'm surprised that so many women on here speak so positively of someone who likes to promote gender stereotypes in children's books. (I've never read her books.)

I know, It was really depressing.
The TW said the woman who evicted the TW was ''Transphobic''.

But no.
It was an inappropriate thing to have done, yet in the new group, there are staff who chant TWAW. :(

Exactly
I've always said I never agree with harassment, abuse, but often disagree on here with trans issues.
This is the same.
Have read the article, it's clear that the headline is at odds with what she actually said in the piece itself which was all.about what she thought about abuse received.
Not her thoughts on trans issues, which is what it has tried to be twisted to be.
I don't blame her for clarifying. I would have done too, to be like "no, I didn't say that at all."
To put it straight
