Wonder how long it will be for the deletion or apology!

It has been said before, but it bears repeating: if men could get pregnant, abortion would be a sacrament.

He was so rude to jkr a couple of years ago that I don’t care what he thinks or says.
he probably has a new book coming out

JacquelinePot · 14/04/2023 09:27

He's such a prolific writer he's always got a book coming out!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 14/04/2023 09:35

He’s not terfing consciously, that’s a feminist slogan from decades ago and he just hasn’t thought about the implications in a genderist world.
He will backtrack as soon as it is pointed out to him.

ApocalipstickNow · 14/04/2023 09:45

Well of course he hasn’t thought it through, because he doesn’t really believe TWAW/TMAM he just feels sympathetic towards trans people and thinks he’s not in the same bigot box as the rest of us (who feel the same way he does I would guess).

NotBadConsidering · 14/04/2023 09:47

It’s indicative of how mental the world is that people on that thread can’t tell a sarcastic reply from a genuine one.

He is not going to do the intellectual work about all this because it's not really affecting him at all. I'm more pleasantly surprised by the men who have done that excruciating work (because the other side tries to make it impossible by changing the meaning of words, by threats, by noise, by the absence of good research which they keep absent). And more disheartened by the women who probably haven't bothered, either, so hand over the rights women have laboriously won over the recent century.

risefromyourgrave · 14/04/2023 19:53

His daughter is a themby so he really can’t employ critical thinking on this matter I don’t think.
And yes, as a PP said, the way he treated JKR was disgraceful and really made me think so much less of him.

ilovemyspace · 14/04/2023 20:25

why is this 'terfing'? Genuine question. It's a quote from Gloria Steinem about women's rights / abortion rights (as decreed by men in government)
“The truth of the matter is one in three American women was having an abortion when it was illegal; and one in three is having an abortion now.” The difference being, of course, that women aren’t dying as a result of it now. Steinem says, as she must have said thousands of times over the last 40 years and with the amusement that permits her to go on, “If men could get pregnant, abortion would be a sacrament.”
She's pointing out that if men had to go through pregnancy which required that, for whatever reason - rape, health etc - they would have legislated to make it legal (and necessary and good) As opposed to the current law making it illegal for women - for whatever reason....

slamfightbrightlight · 14/04/2023 20:40

@ilovemyspace I assume because it’s Terfy to say men can’t get pregnant…

ilovemyspace · 14/04/2023 21:54

@slamfightbrightlight thank you for the explanation :)
I think that's how some people have decided to interpret it - but I don't understand HOW!
and I weep for the death of common sense

Well do YOU think that men can be pregnant?

If you don't you are a Terf too. Trans men do get pregnant and a whole raft of language has changed as a result , cf pregnant person, chest feeding.

It's trans exclusionary to think that only women can be pregnant.

Years ago King tweeted something similar and was bashed online for it, I can't remember the exact tweet but it followed with an attack on JKR and a tweet along the lines of Trans Women are Women.

It's not unreasonable to point out that this is an inconsistency.

Isnt it interesting that Trans women are women but trans men are ALSO women?

OP posts:
lifeturnsonadime · 14/04/2023 22:03

And @ilovemyspace

I agree it's utterly ridiculous.

Gloria Steinmen is right. If MEN really did get pregnant things would be different.

The fact that 'men' can be pregnant and they aren't just points out the hypocrisy of the trans rights movement.

He may still think twaw but there's this

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/10/26/stephen-king-plug-jk-rowling-novel-end-trans-row/

I don't think it's an end to the disagreement though. Perhaps if JKR responds or he answers some of the inevitable 'i'm so disappointed' tra posts, we'll see if he's changed his tune.

Stephen King’s shining plug of JK Rowling novel could signal end of trans row

Same.

OFO, Stephen King.

Mollyollydolly · 26/10/2023 23:35

I've never forgiven him for crapping his pants on Twitter and humiliating JK Rowling. I don't care what he thinks.

MavisMcMinty · 26/10/2023 23:57

Interestingly (to me, a King devotee), in his novel co-written with his son Owen “Sleeping Beauties”, all the women in the world (or the US, same thing) fall asleep and are unwakeable. It was such an interesting concept, how would/could men manage with no women, but it just went a bit silly and certainly didn’t explore a gradual falling apart of a womanless world.

Anyway, nowhere in its hundreds of pages is any of those sleeping women a transwoman.

MavisMcMinty · 26/10/2023 23:58

But yeah, he treated JKR badly and I love him less for it. Didn’t know about his enby daughter though.

PriOn1 · 27/10/2023 03:40

Not sure how J K Rowling would feel about it, but I can’t imagine a good review will go any way towards mending the pain he must have caused her as it isn’t any kind of apology, just an attempt to sweep the argument under the carpet and pretend it’s gone away.

I have so much more respect for John Boyne who actually openly apologized to Graham Linehan for the distress he’d caused and admitted he’d been wrong.

I agree re "Sleeping Beauties". Very disappointing and an undercurrent of misogyny to boot.

I noticed this when I read it too.

Yes, absolutely. John Boyne is a shining example of a proper apology by someone who has put in the time and effort to actually think things through.

Stephen King was a twat to JKR. Saying nice things about her book isn't an apology. And considering that all of her Galbraith novels have had consistently good reviews it's not exactly breaking news either. If he is intending this as offering an olive branch, he needs to try a little harder. If I was JKR, I would just ignore this.

Also love King's books and just finished SB.

Interesting premise, but as ever finished in a rush.

I found the lame 'female socialisation saves the day' angle annoying.

CorruptedCauldron · 27/10/2023 20:47

This praise from King is too little, too late, but I’m glad when anybody high-profile says something nice about JK Rowling and her work. Anything to counteract the vitriol she gets on a daily basis.

Me either. It was utterly unforgivable, he's a coward and can get fucked personally.
