Male kangaroos has 3 penises

They don’t. But I was reading Adam Kay’s “Kay’s Anatomy” with my 8 year old son and we got onto reproduction and female kangaroos have 3 vaginas. My son asked, “so do male kangaroos have 3 penises?”. They don’t. They have one what splits - we researched it.

I’m just wondering what kangaroos would identify as if they have 3 vaginas and 2 penises?

Fun fact. A female kangaroo can feed a new baby and an older joey milk, but gives different quality/blend of milk to each.

Laladybird · 10/04/2023 16:23

Dunno but I too have been insisting on talking about reproduction across different species with my children. Cue eyerolls and Mum's latest obscure obsession.

I'll look up marsupials.

We did birds yesterday. Most species the females only use one ovary. The other one has atrophied a bit like human tails.

Also botanical genitalia in flowers.

Fun fact to tell your kids: A female kangeroo being chased by a predator will strategically take her Joey out of her pouch and throw it to the predator to save herself. Teaching kids about nature is such a bonding experience 😂

unclebuck · 10/04/2023 16:29

Another great fact: A female hyena has a pseudo penis which enables her to express high levels of testosterone. The problem is that she has to give birth through it which is a high price to pay, imo. Poor bitches 😂

Musomama1 · 10/04/2023 16:30

Seeing as all baby kangaroos are called Joey's they are probably already confused.

unclebuck · 10/04/2023 16:32

Fun Fact!
A barnacles penis is 8x a long as it's body, so proportionally the biggest. But a blue whales penis is the biggest dick of all at at 10 feet in length. What a whopper.

Apparently humans can too....

unclebuck · 10/04/2023 16:36

More fun facts! Humans are one of the few animals without a penis bone! It is hypothesised that this was a 'sexy sons' evolutionary step so like a peacocks tail or the antlers of the Irish Elk - the human males absurdly poorly developed penis the ultimate show of fitness. "I can maintain an erection with this terrible penis so I must be super fit" type thing. Other theories focus on possible blunt force trauma injuries causing the loss of the bone but let's not dwell eh?!

As do humans,if they are feeding a newborn and a toddler for example.

What predates kangaroos? I mean, I can look it up, but nothing leaps to mind!

Dingos, dogs, eagles and other large birds of prey

pickledandpuzzled · 10/04/2023 17:02

Wow! Kangaroos are immense. I had no idea. Dingos make perfect sense, though.

Are there other animals that sacrifice offspring in that way? I know birds will prioritise a chick and chuck the sibling out of the nest.

Tinysoxx · 10/04/2023 17:02

The penises of many mammals are barbed with the spikes one way - easy in but hurts the poor female on the way out - and may be related to triggering ovulation. Cats are known for this (hence poor female cats howling when mating) and even some primates. Apparently human ancestors probably had them too but it’s been lost in evolution (strong natural selection by women I would say)!

parietal · 10/04/2023 17:04

Another fun fact - female ferrets can actually die from lack of sex. Their hormonal levels increase and increase until they get a male and without sex they will die. Pet ferrets have to be neutered to stay alive.

Are you all keen to read more!
Sperm competition occurs when a female copulates with 2 males in a short period of time and the sperm compete to fertilise the Ova - it occurs in a wide range of species including humans!

That is a hilarious theory.

Every other female animal gets to look at beautiful tails and feathers and displays and bowers. We get to marvel at cock.

Holy shit! I will remember that when my Yr 7 daughter gives me the gip.

Hyenas rule by a matriarchy - I wonder if it because they’re genitalia is hard for reproduction.

'God' gave women a sense of humour to deal with the ridiculous looking male genitals!
😬

MrsMurphyIWish · 10/04/2023 17:54

I told my Yr 13a this and they tried to research whether a female kangaroo can be both pregnant and be impregnated.

Fun Human Biology Fact: The coronal ridge on a human male penis is designed to scoop out the semen of other men, suggesting that orgies were a popular prehistoric activity

I love biology.

My friend read an article once that female breasts only evolved to be enlarged to attract the the strongest primate.

I have AA breasts. I would have have died out.

@ArcticSkewer exactly! The more we learn about human sexuality the more obvious it becomes that the female is the 'chooser' in our species.

Kangaroos can also carry a blastocyst in a state of embryonic diapause (arrested development) for many months. So if they need to discard one baby then they have another ready to go without needing to mate first.
