The service police investigated 62 reported rapes in 2022, up from 26 cases two years earlier. In total, the service police launched 342 sexual assault investigations last year, a 43 per cent increase on the year before.

As part of an overhaul of teaching practices at Sandhurst, instructors will no longer be allowed to drink alcohol with recruits, while cadets that wolf-whistle at women will face expulsion unless there are mitigating circumstances.

Sanders said Sandhurst was a “world-class institute” despite recent challenges. Thirteen per cent of cadets at Sandhurst are women and only 5 per cent are from ethnic minority backgrounds.

It’s about time this was taken seriously. Everyone knew it went on, but women didn’t dare report or complain. This is fantastic news and I think it’s what the armed forces needs.
