Shot putter Amelia Strickler "It's not exclusion, it's just preserving fairness"

This morning, Radio 4 news programme Today featured a short interview with shot putter Amelia Strickler on World Athletics' decision to keep women's sports for women.

It's a great interview. Strickler is articulate, clear and unwavering in her belief that women's sports are for women. She covers everything (albeit briefly) from the Olympics to parkrun.

I liked the bit where she said "I wish these companies [big sports brand sponsors] would back their female athletes".

I also loved the fact she used the terms "biological males" and "trans identifying males" throughout.

She is just ace. Give it a listen - it'll cheer you up on this drizzly morning and I guarantee you'll say "yesssss!!" out loud at least twice.

Fast forward to about 2:27:40 (the interview was about half an hour from the end of the programme).

I was listening to her interview this morning and punching the air in happiness with every, solid point she raised. I hope there is now a huge wave of sports women at every level speaking out & pushing back.
By the way - Amelia's Facebook page has an email address for her. I emailed her to thank her for everything she said. 😍

I caught the last bit of the interview - v impressive. Is there a pushback on Twitter? I can’t imagine how you can construct an argument against this, but coherent arguments aren’t always the currency Twitter deals in I suppose! What’s being said?

Another interview with Amelia (by Piers Morgan) here:

I've never been interested in the shot put until today 😂But I'll be following her sports career now.
I think she's brilliant. She's up there with Sharron Davies for me.

Apparently it was “transphobic” and everyone should complain to the BBC.

They were particularly triggered because today is yet another Special Day for the Special People (International Day of Trans Visibility?).

Of course, TRAs wanting to silence women‘s voices wouldn’t be at all misogynistic, would it?

lordloveadog · 31/03/2023 13:51

Thank you for posting this. She was wonderful.

nilsmousehammer · 31/03/2023 13:52

If women talking and women's rights are transphobic then the trans-focused values being argued for are not compatible with equality or fit for a modern society. Can't have it both ways.

I’m so pleased she isn’t retired, like most athletes speaking up - so I have someone to watch and root for!

Theredjellybean · 31/03/2023 15:30

I literally cheered while listening.
She was so good , so clear an loved that she used correct terminology...cannot be accused of not being inclusive...when you say biologically female or male .
She deserves all our support.

Birdsweepsin · 31/03/2023 16:34

If Ozanne is so cross about it being on TDoV perhaps there shouldn't be so many special hooplalas... idahobit, tdor, gender fluid pride, pronouns day etc etc etc. It can be really hard to get a non-trans slot.

BigFrau · 31/03/2023 16:38

Ozanne is clearly not that fekkin "speechless".... unfortunately

FFS really? Another 'day of transsomething...' there seems to have been about 4 of these already this year.

Is there a non complaint email address we can use to thank the BBC for this interview?

KatMcBundleFace · 31/03/2023 18:00

It wasn't one sided. The presenter made pains to talk about the debate being:
Biology verses gender
And
Inclusion verses fairness

Its not women's fault that the other side has such rubbish arguments.

It's the final day of women's history month, so good to see a focus on women!
