Owen Jones re-tweets Beth - misogynistic TRA

Beth, a known TRA who campaigned for self ID and was investigated by Wings of Scotland for allegedly being a domestic abuser, the same Beth posted a picture posing with knives is who Owen Jones has chosen to re-tweet discussing Humza Yousaf’s LGBT rights policy.
It’s truly disgusting that he is choosing to amplify the voices of men like this.

Is that you, Talcum?

  1. a statement being substantively true is an absolute defence to defamation under UK law
  2. "a statement is not defamatory unless its publication has caused or is likely to cause serious harm to the reputation of the claimant". Defamation Act 2013

All the posts in this thread allude to statements made by LOJ himself or to information about his reputation that is in the public domain, e.g. Suzanne Moore's comments on leaving the Guardian.

Nothing to do with OJ. The first post alleges an individual is a domestic abuser which is defamatory. Just pointing out Mumsnet is liable for this and therefore needs to be careful!

They may well delete this but on another thread mumsnet were very quick to help the poster who was the actual person who this person abused. Allegedly.

He would’ve been trounced if tens of thousands of women hadn’t already resigned the party in horror at the gender policies in the months leading up to the vote.

DH and I both left over this issue

No it doesn't. The OP states that the individual concerned was investigated by a website for being a domestic abuser. Which is factually correct.

Though I agree with you that 'allegedly' is often expected to lift more weight than it can actually hold, in this case it is used corrected, to convey that these were merely allegations. It is not used in an attempt to shield the poster from accusations of defamation, because what the poster says is factually correct and in the public domain. The poster, wisely, does not repeat any details of what Wings said.

You do know that saying allegedly does not protect you from being defamatory. I suggest Mumsnet delete this thread as it's clearly a libelous attack on an individual......

Oooh, a threat!

The thread's still here and so I guess Mumsnet are willing to take on board the enormous risk of being sued by 'the individual'.....

I wanted to see your Dot Cotton and raise you a Bea from Prisoner Cell Block H.

Alas GIPHY could only provide me with Bea from the Golden Girls.

Bea would have flossed her teeth with him, poor love.

IcakethereforeIam · 28/03/2023 21:00

Does anyone remember Within these Walls with Googie Withers? My dad bought me a single with the theme song on one side and the theme to Black Beauty on the other, a bit random I always thought.

Just imagine either being remade with a tw. Though I never watched PCBH, I assume they didn't have a tw?

I watched it on a very fuzzy black and white TV. I had no clue what anyone actually looked like for years. So they could have had one and I truly wouldn't have been able to tell!

TalcumX · 28/03/2023 21:16

And just googled within these walls...

We didn't have a tele then! Or a indoor toilet!

IcakethereforeIam · 28/03/2023 21:32

I shouldn't have watched it I was far too young, I remember very little about it. We had a b&w TV. You had to tune it into the channels with a single tuning knob, like trying to crack a safe.

Fukuraptor · 28/03/2023 12:08

I've no idea about Beth. But, Wings' level of "investigation" is frequently rumour and plausible deniably innuendos. He's not a reliable source.

E.g. during the independence referendum he cast suspicion about the veracity of a carer with a disabled daughter's experience because she shared the same surname as a Labour politician. His MO is to cast doubts on people, let his mob of followers harass them, then when later actual facts come out for him to deny responsibility by pointing out he didn't actually say they were related or whatever.

Just because like most men he knows what a woman is, doesn't make him a reliable source. He's a shit stirrer who blamed Liverpool fans for Hillsborough.

He may be right about Beth, I really don't know but it hurts a bit to hear women on here post links to his stuff when I know how much damage it can cause.

It was all backed up with evidence and some was confirmed by a third party.

Being the youngest i was usually on arial holding/ fiddling duty! Whilst my sister twiddled the knob to choose between the 3 channels.

I'm feeling nostalgic now.

Fukuraptor · 29/03/2023 03:41

I understand now that people were going on more than Wing's say so and now recognise Beth from some of the previous stories.

Eurgh.

I loved that programme and its haunting theme song. I don't think I've seen any repeats, though, and I don't remember much about it, other than that I loved it.
