Monday's programme is on RSE in schools - they want to hear listeners thoughts about this I'm schools.

What should be covered, experiences.

Which is surprising because instead McGovern should be engaging with the substance: my child tells me she's been shown inappropriate materials in school and I'm prevented from checking them for myself.

Again, this unthinking acceptance that the more things children are told, and the earlier, the better the outcomes.

For example see how the WH approach is pleasing some of the audience:

The mother, Claire, after complaining she can’t get to see her child’s lessons, when asked what should be taught, said ‘I’m not an expert’. In that case, then she should leave it to the experts!

Nuala interrupts Claire again. She's very keen to keep that one particular guest, and not to the others, on the straight and narrow.

It would be nice if they got to Tanya!

It took its time but we did eventually get both:
"teaching the wholly inappropriate stuff is only happening in a few places"
and
"and in any case they'll see much worse online".

It might be interesting to have a look at some of the resources on the TES website. This has long been a place for teachers to find lesson plans etc. that have already been done by someone else. For a long time, these were free to download, a few years ago TES introduced a system where teachers could charge for their resources. As far as I can see, nothing here is vetted in any way. There is a review system. You need a TES account to upload or download resources but it's just a matter of signing up - nothing to say you have to be a teacher.

TES resources are a horror show. The Times covered it last week I think.

SSA have commented several times and complained to TES

I'm not listening as closely as I should - did that speaker just say that telling children that porn is exploitative is 'scaremongering'?

Report

Nuala McGovern asking the academic (Dr Sophie King-Hill) whether a criticism of porn can be presented to children and she wouldn't engage. Talked about scaremongering and that it's not worth it to go up against an industry with vast financial resources.

Tanya's segment now over. Very brief.

It doesn't fit the 'sex positive' narrative...

@WinterTrees yes, she wants to be lead by kids and wants to give them a sex positive message. She things the Cates report is naive and goes against safeguarding.

That was a very don't-scare-the-horses episode.

Saints Alive.

I thought I had misunderstood.

That's one of the most depressing and disheartening things I've heard in a long time. So because the misogynist rot has gone so deep, we need to focus on getting kids to accept it now?

Did that academic really just say that the Miriam Cates report was a safeguarding risk??

Behind. The Birmingham Uni woman who asked fifteen whole children, thinks children should lead what's in RSE? And that we view children and sex as "mutually exclusive"? Well yes. Most decent, sane people DO view children and sex as separate things that shouldn't be mixed!!

Being led by children? OK. Let's have them lead:

  • drugs policies
  • alcohol policies
  • the sale of knives
  • how to run the NHS
  • council tax
  • motorway design

No? Just in this area. Where some adults want children to lead? Did I get that right?

Yes. I hope Cates responds.

Had a look at responses on Twitter. There are a fair few many who seem to hate women and safeguarding equally.

The child-led stuff infuriates me. It's just so asinine. In the words of Hadley Freeman in The Times yesterday, how about adults start behaving like adults?
