Starmer rowing back on self ID - what do we think?

The Times is reporting in its live politics feed that KS has explicitly said Labour will not push for self ID without public backing. I know not everyone can access their content so here is a copied n pasted version: what do you think?

Sir Keir Starmer has shifted Labour’s position on transgender rights as he said the bitter rows over Scotland’s Gender Recognition Bill showed the party must consider public opinion on the issue. The leader of the Labour Party has previously insisted it was committed to updating the Gender Recognition Act to introduce self-identification for transgender people. However, in a significant shift in Labour’s policy, he said the backlash over the SNP’s gender reform bill had made him think again. The SNP passed legislation this year that would make it significantly easier for people to acquire a gender recognition certificate and reduced the minimum age for doing so to 16. The bill was blocked by the UK government.Starmer said: “I think that if we reflect on what’s happened in Scotland, the lesson I take from that is that if you’re going to make reforms, you have to carry the public with you.

“And I think that’s a very important message and I think that’s why it’s clear that in Scotland, there should be a reset of the situation.”

Many of us actually spoil our ballots - and will continue to do so until there is someone standing in our constituency who represents our values and concerns. The Communist party does not stand candidates in most constituencies, nor do the SDP - so how could you vote for them, even if you were so inclined?

Please do not spoil your ballot. Most of the time you have more than 3 options on the ballot paper. Give your vote to a smaller party or Independent. They won't win, but can get their deposit back if they have enough votes increasing the liklihood of more choice going forward. Thanks

I think it's really true that a lot of people lie about how they're going to vote so as not to be scolded by the totalitarian left.

How many times does a Brexit situation (where the chattering classes were so convinced it was going their way and were totally surprised when it didn't) have to happen before they realise?

dimorphism · 25/03/2023 17:16

Also, I'm always mildly interested in why people think scolding other people is a convincing way to change their mind? Do they not understand human nature? I tend to want to do the opposite when someone is talking down to me telling me what to do with smug superiority especially when they're a bit crap on actual facts and reality, as is definitely the case in the TWAW debate.

TWAW doesn't even make sense, if they literally were women then there would be no need to have a 'trans' added and no-one would notice.

Jonei · 25/03/2023 17:16

I don't think people want the hassle from (some of) the left, trying to persuade them to vote how they want, and sneering at people that don't want to vote for labour. On my Facebook it's only every the left that declare their intentions for voting.

Jonei · 25/03/2023 17:17

dimorphism yes.

Honestly it's like some ghastly relative telling to go back to your abusive boyfriend as at least you won't be single...

It is. It's exactly like that.

With added value that saying "I vote Labour" has become a virtue signal to others that you are a Good Person and better than people Not Like You

TooBigForMyBoots · 25/03/2023 17:24

Scolded by the totalitarian left?

I have been accused of something called woke scolding for pointing out the many ways this Tory government have destroyed women's rights. I am not totalitarian left. I am a feminist.

Is it me or does that not even make sense? The word female is not commonly used to refer to a sex category? 😵‍💫

That will come as a surprise to e.g veterinary surgeons.

Labour are going to be the next party in power. So if you really cared about this issue then tell your Labour MP or candidate you would vote Labour if they support your views.

Sure, sure. Just like Hillary Clinton was going to be President in 2016. Oh, wait...

LittleFingerStrength · 25/03/2023 17:58

nilsmousehammer · 25/03/2023 15:11

And because of the current shoved marketing that anyone not voting Labour (regardless of how batshit and crap they are) is Evil, many people will lie when asked about their voting intentions. "Oh yes gov, I'll vote Labour please don't rant at me "

Then in the privacy of the ballotbox they will do what they actually want to do, and Labour will be all surprised that the forecasts don't match the outcomes. Again.

My Mum does this, tells everyone political who comes to the door she will vote for them because she is scared of reprisals and does as she pleases.

But if your scolding makes you feel good (it does) and prevents others from voting Labour ( because you are so bloody annoying) what is the point. People do not need your help to make their decisions.

Laladybird · 25/03/2023 18:38

@TooBigForMyBoots four years ago was a choice between two plonkers for PM. I was glad to see the back of Johnson and then Truss. But I didn't lament Corbyn's loss either.

Voting for me is usually the least mad candidate on the ballot paper for my constituency.

On this critical issue, Sunak has made a clear statement. For which I am relieved. But the Tory candidate on my ballot might be anti women.

In marginal seats, one pro woman candidate might upset the apple cart.

How is pointing out what a disaster the Tories have been for women /the country scolding? And why would my posts prevent anyone from voting Labour?Confused

I am perfectly capable of making my own decisions based on my own sense of personal integrity. I will only vote positively going forward in that my vote has to mean something. I'm not interested in game playing.

I cannot vote Green or Lib Dem ( they are both fully loop the loop when it comes to Genderism), and now I cannot vote for my local Labour MP because she is too. I'm no longer interested in voting for far Left parties as I've left that sort of ideological tribalism behind. I'll see what the local Conservative candidate has to say - but where I live the Conservatives have no chance of election so I'd have to like that candidate a lot in order to vote for them.

I decided some time ago that spoiling was my only option. I'm accepting of that.

I live in a city, Liverpool, where hating the Tories is considered a badge of belonging - and quite frankly I'm bored of it. It enables local politicians to not take responsibility for their own attitudes and their own decisions and even for their own corruption. It's far easier to blame everything on the bogeyman.

Yes, my city has received the largest budget cuts of any city under the Tory austerity measures.......but I'm done with tribal party politics - and an incoming Labour administration is not going to make that much of a difference to anything.
