All three SNP leader candidates interviewed on Sky News just now.

It's a live channel, so no idea how to share a time stamp, sorry. Anyway:

Question: 'Is JK Rowling a national treasure'

Humza: 'Yes, I think she's done amazing in terms of the books she's written, but I disagree ve-HEM-EN-ently with her on the issue of transgender rights.'

Kate: 'Yes. And I do think she's brave'.

Interviewer: 'Do you disagree with her on the issue of transgender rights?'

Kate; 'No, I don't disagree with her'.

Ash: 'I think she's a national treasure, yes. I think she was very brave to speak out on an issue where many women who had raised legitimate concerns were receiving you know, quite threatening communications, so yes, she's definitely a national treasure.'

[Followed by a loud bang off-stage, either the producer fainting, Nicola dropping her Harry Potter book, or as suggested elsewhere, someone being shot.]

Gosh. The women are, of course, right.

that was from a hustings, was it? So snp members asking about JKR? Trying to set the women up, maybe?

ArabellaScott · 13/03/2023 20:48

It was a phoned-in question on a Sky News interview panel show. Not SNP members, necessarily.

Good to see! Here's the clip rather than the live feed, which has moved on somewhat.

And Humza - don't use a word if you don't know how to pronounce it!

Kate Forbes backs JKR on trans rights.
ScribblingPixie · 13/03/2023 21:34

Why did he feel the need to use the word vehemently?

ArabellaScott · 13/03/2023 21:55

He didn't, he used the word VEHEEMENENTLY.

Humza - Misogynist.

ArabellaScott · 13/03/2023 22:02

Humza is mostly enamoured of Humzelf.

Well, I am not going to throw a stone about pronunciation of vehemently, glass houses and all. 😔

ArabellaScott · 13/03/2023 22:07

Ah, you're a better wumman than me, Helleofabore. Grin

Nah. Just have realised I have been mispronouncing it forever… 😁But hey, I have never really heard it pronounced before. Just read it.

Big Word Syndrome. 'I use Big Words to sound clever and impressive.'

'Strongly' would have done just fine.

That got me thinking about words you never hear, just read. One in particular has been 'popular' recentlyGrin - hyperbole. I have since heard it being said (high-per-bo-lee) but internally, when I see it not hear it, I still think 'hyper-bowl'.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 14/03/2023 10:32

I always remember a radio thing with a University admissions interviewer(not sure exactly where, and long ago) saying how positively they always regarded an interviewee who used a big word correctly but pronounced it wrong, because it showed that they had done independent reading rather than being hothoused and trained by their school.

MorrisZapp · 14/03/2023 10:34

I'm sure the daft article who plays Hermaninny would agree with Humself.

Helleofabore · 14/03/2023 10:45

It is not uncommon amongst my friends where I grew up. We all grew up reading books but the words might have fallen out of verbal use. So, we knew the word but not heard it, or some words have been pronounced very differently too. For instance, furore.

Abhannmor · 14/03/2023 11:08

ArabellaScott · 13/03/2023 22:02

Humza is mostly enamoured of Humzelf.

Noticed he praised her books. No mention of her women's refuge or other charity work.

Dodgy character. Didn't support gay marriage.

ArabellaScott · 14/03/2023 11:16

Tbh it was Humzas EMPHATIC enunciation more than his pronunciation that I found amusing. He had to close his eyes and squeeze out the word to show how much he disagreed with the national treasure.

Yes. He was very vehement about how he disagreed. Grin Grin

lifeturnsonadime · 14/03/2023 11:20

What does Humza say that JKR has said that is anti trans?

I'd also like to know what rights he thinks trans people don't already have? And why he thinks they need more rights than everyone else, even when this demonstrably (think Adam Graham) has the starting point of putting women at a detriment?

Otherwise yeh he's just another common or garden misogynist.

Is there any chance that KF could sweep up AR's votes and beat Yousless in the second round?

rioseco · 14/03/2023 11:28

If he doesn't get 50% in the first round..

I believe so. It's an STV system. But you don't hve to vote for all three candidates. So it depends ...

Polls show Forbes and Yousaf pretty much neck and neck among SNP members.
