I realise it's lip service, but I've been watching with dismay interest the posts on social media for International Women's Day from various brands.

These include Turtle Bay "celebrating all of our female identifying team members", and Oxfam "wanting to amplify the power of all women", "especially queer and trans women".

What others, good or bad, have been spotted?

Why especially queer and trans?

Social media and narcissist self promotion all over LinkedIn is just awful. Brands and people who promote themselves as brands. Envy

I've come to the conclusion that all awards and 'days' are just opportunities to be an attention seeking nob these days. Vacuous and meaningless. But I am in a grump generally so maybe it's me.

Redshoeblueshoe · 08/03/2023 11:02

The Independent have done a feature on what it's like to be a woman.

Obviously there aren't any women around, so the article is by a TW. It's on Twitter for people who want to look. They are getting hammered for it.

Although it's not a social media post Go Fund Me have stopped people donating to Women won't wheesht - yes on International Women's Day bastards

Ohyoudodoyou · 08/03/2023 11:03

I've always shared on social media for for several years but it's so loaded now isn't it? I know so many women in my circle sharing more than ever and is suspect it's because they feel aggrieved at all the aggression towards us when we try to speak up.

EsmesRedPetticoat · 08/03/2023 11:05

I had a “happy women’s day, let’s celebrate our women authors” email from Harper Collins today. On the list of women authors was…

Juno Dawson

because they are probably short of women writers on their books right?

I tend to avoid social media on IWD for the benefit of my blood pressure, but I've just noticed that the mumsnet logo is purple and green (against white background) today. So that's given me a warm glow.

Ahh this is nice

Meanwhile in Canada, Hershey's have launched a limited edition range of chocolate bars rebranded Her/She, and are running a campaign featuring a trans person called Fae Johnstone.

The Independent is covering what it describes as a 'right-wing backlash' on social media. To quote the article: A Hershey’s International Women’s Day campaign featuring a trans activist has sparked a furious backlash from people with right-wing anti-trans views

Also people with left-wing pro-women's rights views, but why let a little balance get in the way of your agenda?

I was going to point this out too!!

I don't care what Hershey's do. Their chocolate smells of baby sick.

I was just coming to have a whinge about why every post i’m seeing on Instagram seems to be “on IWD let’s not forget about the TW”. Ffs. Just let us have one day!

ImFineThankYouSusan · 08/03/2023 12:26

This dropped in my email today from a aussie clothing store 🙄

There's a twat on my social media page I keep purely for entertainment value - tags himself onto every fucking cause going and posted about IWD including 'ALL women' - I know full
Well what he means but he has 1000's of followers (again I'm sure for entertainment value) and he will get a tiny portion of likes for his bearded fuckery. Everyone loathes him!

UncomfortablyDumb · 08/03/2023 12:32

I have a tiny business (as in it's just me, a woman) and am posting about women led businesses today. From my perspective at least, it's a genuine celebration.

Most of the small businesses I know are run by women trying to squeeze it in around other responsibilities.

Although now, I'm a bit worried that this might be having the opposite effect and putting people off 😬

But its not all big brands just trying to cash in. And centring TW while doing so. Honest.

Mumteedum · 08/03/2023 12:37

@UncomfortablyDumb No, you're right to celebrate your achievements. We need to lift other women up and support them every day.

What I hate is tokenistic and shallow use of these days, basically to get some free publicity from large organizations by jumping on a bandwagon in a meaningless way. There was a great post about this last week. I will try and find it.

And you go get em, @UncomfortablyDumb ! Wish you every success ✊

Given the scandals around Oxfam, I'm minded that it's because they treat women and girls so badly.

Whether it's young girls in Haiti who had to trade sex for medicines and aid from senior Oxfam personnel - or how badly they treat women who are whistleblowers about safeguarding.

I am choosing to forget TW today more than any other and am happily watching the petition numbers rise on the Parliamentary petition to Update the Equality Act. We want our stuff and our spaces back.
Only two clicks to make a vote.....
Also happy to boycott Hersheys forever, it is fake.....

Waitwhat23 · 08/03/2023 13:21

My favourite thing to do on Twitter on IWD is watch the Gender Pay Gap account target each company crowing about how they are committed to equality (including those who are particularly including males) with the details of their gap. New for this year is details of how their gender pay gap has increased or decreased since last year. The worst I've seen today is 52%. So many organisations then delete their posts very quickly...

Blort · 08/03/2023 14:39

India Willoughby on Twitter just now saying that trans women are being excluded from representation on TV today for IWD.

Didn't India also say that trans women were only 0.2% of the population last month? By their own account it would be entirely unnecessary to force inclusion.

Yes, well bloody done @Mumsnet

Waitwhat23 · 08/03/2023 15:16

Just seen a particularly pathetic post on a Facebook post, linking this specific thread as an example of Mumsnet's 'transphobia'.

That's right, ladies. Expecting women to be centred on International Women's Day is simply a step too far.

A FB post by a woman or a man?
