They've set up a gardening page if you look up "Defend Free Speech in Edinburgh"

Apologies if this has already been linked to, but I love this approach, anyone local should complain to the council using this approach.

That's excellent, thanks!

ArabellaScott · 13/03/2023 22:51

Yes, that's a very good point. Councillor Mumford wants to stage a protest that is going to endanger the public, she can pay for it.

stealtheatingtunnocks · 14/03/2023 02:37

What is it that they are protesting? Parents wanting to be involved with their kids?

seems a bit Cuktural revolutionary, isn’t it!

PorcelinaV · 14/03/2023 04:25

No one tries to stop the trans-activists from having a meeting do they? I guess they have to stamp down on the mere possibility that a non-approved viewpoint might be expressed at a tiny event.

WaterThyme · 14/03/2023 10:27

Sorry forgot to add link to Evening News article yesterday saying Unite was calling for the meet to be called off for the sake of library staff:

Unite choosing the side of the misogynists? I'm shocked! www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/oct/02/unite-union-female-officers-bullying-harassment-internal-report

Application of the Model Councillors' Code of Conduct
www.local.gov.uk/publications/guidance-local-government-association-model-councillor-code-conduct

The meeting is legal, is the councillor misusing their position to encourage a demonstration?

IwantToRetire · 14/03/2023 16:43

Good news! (I hope it goes well / safely)

The council’s cunning plan backfired. It had not counted on the army of women in Edinburgh and elsewhere who are fed up being told that their mainstream views are hateful. Within hours of a fundraiser going live, more than enough money had been raised to meet the council’s undemocratic demand. The meeting will go ahead on Tuesday, but at what cost?

Faffertea · 14/03/2023 20:21

Any updates?
Did the meeting go ahead? I hope so and I hope all were safe from these bullying thugs.

TheBiologyStupid · 14/03/2023 20:26

I was just wondering the same thing.

Waitwhat23 · 14/03/2023 20:27

It did. Some absolutely delightful signs from the 'counter protesters'. They were also enjoying themselves, shouting at women.

ArabellaScott · 14/03/2023 20:46

Hope the meeting went well. Despite the unpleasant signs and masked men.

What a charming bunch, sure to win people over like that. Hope the meeting itself was productive and positive, despite the lunacy outside.

Waitwhat23 · 14/03/2023 23:25

I wasn't there but the chat I've heard is that it went well (apart from wee scrotes shouting to intimidate women).

Ugly scenes as parents defy 'cancel culture' gender warriors to hold peaceful meeting in Edinburgh

After mums and dads were forced to raise £600 to pay for security guards, around 150 protestors shout 'shame on you' and 'no TERFS on our turf' as they gathered to discuss trans ideology in Scotland's classrooms

www.scottishdailyexpress.co.uk/news/scottish-news/ugly-scenes-parents-defy-cancel-29459709

IwantToRetire · 15/03/2023 00:00

I've looked at a number of news paper reports, including national papers.

they are all taking the line of the protestors that they are fighting to defend LGBT rights from reactionary right wingers.

I hope at some point the parents are able to put out a statement which even if the MSM wont share we can help publicise.

Its so depressing, when even the Daily Mail has been conned into publishing 2 articles about KJK in Australia which are complete woke left rants, that papers within the UK cant even be bothered to get both sides of the story.

Waitwhat23 · 15/03/2023 00:20

I found this bit particularly sinister -

'Cllr Mumford, who attended the demo, told the crowd she was trying to get such meetings banned in future.'

No debate writ large.

RhannionKPSS · 15/03/2023 00:38

Mumford can try but she won’t succeed 💪💚🤍💜

Can't do a sharetoken at the moment, will do one later.

"About 200 people with placards gathered outside Portobello Library..." not going by the picture that accompanies the article, that's not 200.

I'm wondering about the Scottish Greens. I used to think they were just driven and quite daft, but lately I'm starting to think they are a bit more worrying.

There's a huge amount of 'othering' - anyone who doesn't agree with them is a 'fascist' and must be shut down, driven out, shamed and smeared.

They don't operate like a mature and rational political party. Very unhealthy group dynamics from what I see.

There is no charismatic leader, otherwise...

RhannionKPSS · 15/03/2023 11:05

There was about 50-60 demonstrators , some of whom hung around in the cold long after the talk was over.

RhannionKPSS · 15/03/2023 11:07

The talk went very well, a couple of demonstrators had to be removed from the library before the talk started. Police were excellent

ArabellaScott · 15/03/2023 11:09

Glad to hear it, Rhannion. I'm wondering if they'll be picketing Parent Council meetings in future, lest the parents be asking any questions about the curriculum that risk being classed as wrongthink?

IwantToRetire · 15/03/2023 16:03

If you paste the Times link upthread into archive.ph you can see the article.

At least this reporter bothered to speak to those holding the meeting.

I am now so confused by the media coverage I have forgotten who or what is the target of the meeting. But whoever or whatever I hope they are taking note!
