They've set up a gardening page if you look up "Defend Free Speech in Edinburgh"

currently suspended donations ....

ArcticSkewer · 08/03/2023 09:04

I'll donate later to the court costs.

Faffertea · 08/03/2023 09:12

I am incensed by the requirement that women (or anyone) has to pay security to exercise their democratic right to free speech. And of course, should the organisers use a group who volunteer to help they will of course be slandered as aligned with the far right.

And now, donations to support these women are stopped too.

You need security to speak freely. And if you fundraise to get the security we’ve demanded we’ll cut you off from that too.

Authoritarianism at its finest.

How do we get action from government etc? I imagine contacting relevant MP or council will be entirely useless.

We have been unable to upload our bank details to the GoFundMe site and have received an email from GoFundMe saying that they urgently want to contact us (they haven't) and need to review our appeal. Suspect that the usual suspects have bombarded GoFundMe with complaints that they are hosting hate. So if you get a message from GoFundMe saying that they are returning your donation please please complaint

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 08/03/2023 09:31

Jesus christ

such authoritarianism

ArabellaScott · 08/03/2023 09:39

They should know by now that women are capable of driving to wherever and handing over tenners in cold hard cash, if need be.

You'll not stop us speaking, or meeting, or thinking, you wee horrors.

IIRC football clubs do pay something towards policing for matches (not sure they cover all of it though) and of course they do have their own security/stewards on matchdays.

Interesting, thanks. I'm in Germany and essentially no city even dares try this - one did and got challenged in court. So my example doesn't work but it's a different situation of course given the clubs earn revenue off their matches. Changing the victims of aggression for protection is out of order and a failure of law enforcement.

ohfibonacci · 08/03/2023 09:41

Hoping this hits the Scotsman /Evening News. Sunlight needed on these tactics. Shocking. Desperate

ArabellaScott · 08/03/2023 09:43

So, what do we have

  • feminist group threatened by terrorists.
-Council insists they pay for security for a meeting
  • Gofundme suspends their funding

Women silenced on International Women's Day.

Anyone trying to stop women meeting and talking in 2023 - you are a fucking disgrace.

Klex · 08/03/2023 09:43

Looks like the gardening efforts have been subject to a great freeze

There’s an article in the Times but I can’t see it for the pay wall

You nailed it!

People will deny it until the cows come home, but that is exactly what it is. Women silenced on IWD.

Datun · 08/03/2023 10:11

Christ almighty i'm getting so fucked off with all this.

Is it really beyond the wit of the government to have one person publicly announce that no, you cannot stop women's fundraising to talk about their rights, yes, it's completely legal to exclude men from their spaces, no, don't teach little kids about masturbation and anal sex and don't set up baby drag shows.

Fucking hell.

EsmaCannonball · 08/03/2023 10:15

In the case of football clubs it's because the clubs' own fans may cause trouble. In this case the attendees of the talk are the ones who need protection.

Brefugee · 08/03/2023 10:25

I'm in Germany too, and a season ticket holder at one of the 1. Bundesliga clubs with one of the high-risk matches, and it is still a matter of discussion here. It is moving towards at least extra policing required for these matches. I guess you're talking about the Werder vs HSV match where Bremen were asked to pay 400k Euros?

Azaila · 08/03/2023 15:29

Hey, I’m from the Porty area, is this still going ahead? Did they manage to get the funds for security? Is anyone from this thread going? I was thinking of going along and would like to but I’m 37 weeks pregnant with a high risk pregnancy and don’t want to risk getting attacked by activists and or being harassed by them. I’ve seen what they’re capable of when protesting at other women’s rights groups.

Never heard a thing about it until I saw the article in the Times.

I don't think it's worth the risk. You just can't tell what is going to happen at these events. The odds are that someone is going to be seriously injured at some point.

Binglebong · 08/03/2023 19:42

Since there seems to be protests at Drag Queen Story Time I trust Ada H Dee is being charged? What's sauce for the goose is sauce for the trans goose after all.

ArabellaScott · 08/03/2023 20:24

PAge still not taking donations.

WandaWomblesaurus · 09/03/2023 09:11

A Facebook page called Porty Pride has been deleting any questioning around the event that doesn't fit with their narrative - some pretty odd claims on there about children taking their lives and calls for the library staff to sabotage the event. When they are deleting comments from LGB people they cannot be held as representative of a whole group. It's shocking.

You need to keep yourself safe, so don't attend in person, but I'd maybe write to the library and say that it's not fair that discussions like this are not being allowed to take place without threats and harassment of the people organising it. There's no reason for this level of hostility when discussing the safeguarding of children. Why the threats and the inability to discuss without screaming about suicide? It's mad.
