Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

GIDS at the Tavistock will be the next medical scandal, I suspect

I've just listened to the "Gender: A Wider Lens" podcast by Sasha Ayed & Stella O'Malley in conversation with Hannah Barnes (find it where you get your podcasts or on YouTube). I haven't read Time to Think yet, but I was gasping at the matter-of-fact way Ms Barnes recounted events, policies, actions etc at the Tavistock GIDS which were absolutely scandalous. How Dr Polly Carmichael is still allowed to practice medicine is beyond me ...

I was wondering this after reading Hannah Barnes’ book. So many failures and she’s still managing the unit. How on earth do they expect things to improve under her management?

A link with episode notes:

It really is astonishing what went on at GIDS, and the lengths many have had to go to to bring the scandals to public attention.

I'm half way through Time to Think. It's an evidenced and devastating account of frankly criminal behaviour alongside overwhelming naivety on the part of so many adults at all levels in the NHS. Along with evidence of massive inappropriate influence on child healthcare from adult queer theory political activist groups.

sadly I absolutely agree. Just finished reading the book. Still struggling to pick my jaw back up off the floor.

I mean I’ve worked in some dysfunctional organisations in my time but here they had children’s whole lives in their hands!

PronounssheRa · 07/03/2023 13:45

It's been discussed on here a lots, and I agree, I fear its going to be very very expensive for the NHS.

She's not a medical doctor. Clinical psychologist, I think.

NotBadConsidering · 08/03/2023 00:41

It already IS the next medical scandal. It’s a worldwide scandal.

BlueHeelers · 09/03/2023 14:31

Yes @NotBadConsidering I think FWR readers/posters know this, but it's not making the headlines in the way it should. The journalists who investigate the topic are rare - although what' interesting is that when they do, they are completely gob-smacked by what they find - both Helen Joyce & Hannah Barnes say they came to the topic of the transing of children without too much belief either one way or the other. And both of the were shocked. Jesse Singal is also one of the few US journalists to report honestly & in a balanced way on this. I really enjoy his & Katie Herzog's podcast Blocked & Reported and he speaks about the parlous state of some journalism frequently.

I look forward to the day when that section of CBeebies' I am Leo, with "Dr Polly" and the misinformation about puberty blockers is edited out…
