Lack of woman's voice in Drive to survive BBC article made me angry!

Womens voice in DTS

I enjoy following F1 and like Drive to Survive, but the lack of women in motor sports is appalling. So was really interested to read this article, and it is shocking how little women talk in the series. So the topic absolutely deserves focus on it.

However this good work was completely undone by the following sentence:

Across all five seasons of Drive to Survive, the research said, people who identify as women have spoken for less than an hour out of 32 hours of episodes.

It utterly infuriates me that when discussing the sex based exclusion women face in such a male dominated sport that women are supposedly ‘identifying’ as women.

All we can hope for is that for the next season Lewis Hamilton identifies as a woman and voila equality in the sport is solved!

(Ignoring the very real physical differences that mean women would struggle to compete in mens F1 fairly).

I know it’s a Newsbeat article but still!!!!

I dunno. I don't think it's too shocking that so few women speak in the series when 100% of the drivers are men and a large part of it is the drivers speaking about their experiences. I'm sure the same would be said of the various football docu series'.

This is an awkward one because they list Caitlyn Jenner as one of the people who identity as women.

So would you prefer it if Jenner was listed as "woman" or "person who identifies as a woman"?

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 05/03/2023 16:09

Why was Jenner in it? Jenner is a retired Olympic participant in decathlon, and the ten events for that are (according to wikipedia): 100 metres, 400 metres, 1500 metres, 110 metre hurdles, long jump, high jump, pole vault, discus throw, javelin throw and shotput.

I see no Formula 1 racing in there.

Perhaps the time Jenner crashed a Cadillac while towing a golf buggy, causing another driver's death, is what merited Jenner's inclusion?

Wouldn’t surprise me if most of that hour was taken up by Charlie Martin

EndlessTea · 05/03/2023 19:49

Yup. Charlie Martin is #3 of ‘Inspirational Women in Motorsports’

Doesn't Jenner sponsor one of the W series teams?

(W Series, the point of which was to get women into motor racing, has failed fiancially)

@Oysterbabe - these were my thoughts too.
