www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/03/04/government-considering-urgent-review-inappropriate-sex-education/

"Rishi Sunak is considering launching an urgent review of “age-inappropriate” sex education materialss_ in schools, The Telegraph understands.
The Prime Minister has told multiple colleagues that he is alarmed about the content of Relationship and Sex Educationn_ (RSE) lessons taught in classrooms across the country.
This week, he was presented with a dossier of evidence by MPs showing that “unsuitably sexually explicit” teaching resources and lessons presenting gender fluidity as fact have been prepared for children.
The evidence, collated by the New Social Covenant Unit think tank, includes case studies of primary school children as young as nine being taught about masturbation. In other instances, the think tank found school children had been “indoctrinated” with contested gender ideology theories that could make them question whether they have been born in the wrong body.
Miriam Cates, the Conservative MP for Pennistone and Stockbridge, delivered the 130-page report to the Prime Minister on Wednesday and has urged him to consider a “public inquiry”.
“It’s becoming more and more clear how inappropriate materials are,” she told The Telegraph. “This is a very widespread problem.”
She said that the teaching of trans identification in schools has become increasingly common and could be contributing to a rise in the number of children seeking medical intervention, including puberty blockers and hormone treatment.
The report argues that a moratorium on aspects of RSE teaching may be necessary to “halt a widespread culture of safeguarding failure”. It raises concerns about the influence of third-party providers on RSE in schools."

There was an article in the Telegraph on this - does anyone have an archive link?

ResisterRex · 04/03/2023 20:11

Check the Conservatives for Women tweet. We can't post archive links but they always post one!

About time. I really hope information about this spreads far and wide and that Starmer is called to account for his silence on this issue. I hope Rishi follows through with an inquiry and thank goodness for Miriam Cates.

Dame Rachel de Souza, the Children’s Commissioner, said: “There is no doubt that the duty to protect children from harmful or inappropriate content both online and offline is of paramount importance – but it is just as important that they are given the knowledge and skills they need to navigate the world around them and make sensible, informed judgements. That’s why we must put their views and voices at the heart of how RSHE is taught, while also making sure that parents and carers are given reassurances about what they are learning.”

This, from the Children's Commissioner, reads as very vague and ambiguous to me.

Commenting to follow and bump. This is a very interesting development.
I read the Swindon Council tweets that are referred to in the article on a different FWR thread. Alarming stuff (too many to choose from but the stand-out for me was the discussion with Year 10 students that a relationship could be taken to "the next level" by filming sexual acts together) and it's great to see it being called out at the highest level.

ReadersD1gest · 04/03/2023 20:19

Interesting. On a side note, "considering" and "urgent" kind of cancel each other out, don't they?

DameMaud · 04/03/2023 20:19

And thanks for posting Rex.
Miriam Cates is so indefatigable on this. She is a powerhouse!

twitterexile · 04/03/2023 20:24

Thank god - we need adults in the room and all over this NOW.

Signalbox · 04/03/2023 20:28

He needs a new Secretary of State for Education.

Agree. Another one who's been asleep at the wheel

This sounds very promising. Agree with other Miriam has been brilliant on this issues. The Education Minister doesn't have the guts to deal with this. I'm guessing she knows a child who is socially transitioning etc.

DemiColon · 04/03/2023 20:41

Good.

Hopefully there will be enough time for real action before there is another election.

JustWaking · 04/03/2023 20:42

That’s why we must put their views and voices at the heart of how RSHE is taught

How ridiculous! Children's best interests - absolutely. But not their 'views and voices' Confused The whole point is that they don't know this stuff yet.

We're the adults, and must decide what is appropriate to teach at what age.

WickedSerious · 04/03/2023 20:42

Well it's about fucking time.

Absolutely. "Their views on what they want to be taught" is insane.

Wholeheartedly agree with this. There's a recent conflation of children's rights and best interests (very important) with them deciding everything for themselves because they know what's best for them (absolute madness).

Recently I got into a bit of a kerfuffle with an acquaintance over trans issues and they maintained that children should be able to decide if they want to take puberty blockers because "we don't give kids enough credit that they know themselves."

Otherwise sensible adults genuinely believe this shit.

Rainbowshit · 04/03/2023 21:01

Good. They should Ben all third parties from teaching RSE and standardised what is to be taught across the whole country.

Wish they were able to influence this in Scotland.

Boiledbeetle · 04/03/2023 21:03

He had better do more than just sodding considering.

Yes. Consider quickly, please, Rishi.

Rightsraptor · 04/03/2023 21:22

James Esses has a piece in The Spectator about drag queens and children. He says that he and various others wrote to the Children's Commissioner about it and they never even received an answer.

So don't hold your breath waiting for anything from Rachel de Sousa.

Rightsraptor · 04/03/2023 21:37

I have an online subscription to The Telegraph (free for 3 months or something) so read the article but can't share.

They are asking for parents' comments on this subject, so do take out a subscription if you can and let them know.

JacquelinePot · 04/03/2023 21:37

Less "considering", Mr Sunak, more doing

Rightsraptor · 04/03/2023 22:11

I hope it's just government speak, @JacquelinePot, for kicking arse.
