I should be doing something more useful with my time but this meeting is quite a fascinating watch.

I'm around 40 mins in. A woman just said that women had been essentially tricked into being anti surgery/medication for kids. It's the fault of evangelical Christians who want to ban abortion, we need to follow the money apparently.

She didn't explain how following the money to evangelical Christians (even if true) means that children aren't harmed by puberty blockers and unnecessary surgeries.

Anyway, it's quite an interesting watch and kudos to them for holding a meeting in public.

We've gone from 7 people watching up to 14 since it started. Exciting times.

A male archivist who works at Edinburgh university (if I heard him correctly is speaking now). He's talking about making sure the Adult Human Female film isn't screened, saying they need to mobilise against it.

I wonder what other films he thinks aren't suitable for viewing at uni?

Woman "not in favour of shutting down debate, of cancelling programmes at all, but I do draw a line".

She had to turn it off after 20 minutes, saying it's hate speech.

I don't know what you're talking about, perhaps others are the same?

I just googled the book shop. Looks like an event that I really should listen to if I want to understand better where "real" people who opposed sex based rights are coming from..

Thank you. I couldn't get your link to work, OP, but I found the video on the Lighthouse Books website:

lighthousebookshop.com/events/fight-for-trans-liberation-defend-democracy

It begins about 25 minutes after the video starts!

It's worth a watch, to try to understand the echo chamber that supporters of gender identity ideology are living in. I got the impression that most of the speakers in the discussion were sincere, which is more worrying than if they were opportunists. The speaker who described his impression of the part of Adult Human Female (which he turned off in despair after 16/60 minutes, couldn't quite tell which) seems to have heard things that weren't said, and not heard anything that was - in particular, he didn't hear anything about women.

Lighthouse used to be a fairly normal left wing bookshop called Word Power. A few years ago it changed hands and the new management have been up to their necks in genderism since then.

Im watching. About 10 minutes in so far. Really interesting to see people trying to rationally argue their opinions on all this.

unwashedanddazed · 02/03/2023 11:10

Only watched a few moments of it cause I can't be bothered with genderous navel gazing, but I do want to know if the person on the front row in a stripey t-shirt is blind folded? I could understand why. Ear defenders would help too.

Yfory · 02/03/2023 11:13

Unwashed, I presume its a mask?

Unwashed, I presume its a mask?

Ok. Never seen one tied like that.

Although I was being facetious really 😷

Yfory · 02/03/2023 13:09

Unwashed - I figured that lol. I was surprised tbh to see people wearing masks, especially someone at the front. Few people where I am have bothered with masks for ages and ages now.

beastlyslumber · 02/03/2023 13:19

Of course they wear masks. It signals how virtuous they are.
