Autistic teen told to call male TA “Mx” & not “Sir” or “Mr *name*

This happened to dd this morning at school. She then came out of school at told me she no longer wants one to one help in her lessons - her EHCP says 25 hours a week. It’s too difficult to remember what to call him and she’s embarrassed she will get it wrong in front of the other students.

What now? I want to make a formal complaint. Am raging tbh. Can someone tell me who I need to be contacting please? The school are totally woke and rainbow soaked. Thank you.

Bollox has it been around a long time!

well, I had a teacher using this title back in the 70s

ReadersD1gest · 24/02/2023 21:26

Sure you did...

MichelleScarn · 24/02/2023 21:27

Can't see any 'hatred' just anger and incredulousness at the fact that some people think that a child who has the level of need that has been accepted needing 25hrs 1:1 should be placed in a position that exacerbates her anxiety in order to appease the ADULT WHOSE ROLE IT IS TO REDUCE BARRIERS AND DIFFICULTIES FOR HER!!
I'd now be concerned as to why someone who's happy to do this has taken on such a role.

I'm guessing they've never witnessed/experienced how easy it is for the smallest of things to be the biggest of obstacles

I had to go in for a discussion after an external educational provider came in to do Healthy Eating at primary.

I assume the aim was to encourage children to eat vegetables, and not to beg their parents for McDonalds all the time. The discussion of the perils of junk food and burgers led to Mini-Pots becoming petrified of eating anything in a patty shape. So nut cutlets have been out ever since.

MichelleScarn · 24/02/2023 21:28

And hats off to those who are able to make sense of my rant above! 😬

WomaninBoots · 24/02/2023 21:28

The child is so terrified she'll get it wrong that she'd rather be without help. Fuck off pretending this is a normal title. Kids call female teachers Sir and Mum and Dr teachers MrDr and all sorts. I doubt there is this level of stress attached. But the special people create special stress. Kid should be able to call him Mr with no consequences. That won't be the case will it?

To be fair Mini Pots is right to be scared of nut cutlets.

Blghhh

I don't personally think there's a massive issue per se with using 'Mx' or a different title. Personal choice, and I can see the logic - somewhat similar to 'Ms', only extended. I quite like the idea of a unisex title, if one MUST use a title.

The problem is that a child/young person is so worried about it. That should absolutely NOT be happening. It especially shouldn't be happening when the child/YP is supposed to be being supported by this member of staff.

Perfectly

I looked it up - DVLA made it an option for driving licenses in May 2015, which was the first UK government ID to allow it.

So nope, definitely not long established. If it were a person it would still be young enough to be in primary school.

Somanyquestionstoaskaboutthis · 24/02/2023 21:30

You are not going to get anywhere by going into school and complaining about a teacher or TA's name

It would be a very poor school who dismissed this as a complaint about a name. OPs dd cannot process this strange word, she is getting anxious about it to the extent she doesn’t want the TA working with her. If the TA ignored her getting it wrong she wouldn’t be this anxious and her schooling in jeopardy.

The complaint is that dd cannot do this and so either needs the TA to stop insisting on it and calling her out in front of her peers, or a different TA. Anyone who cares more about their title than the students well-being should not be that students support.

done what? Chosen his title? out of a range of normal acceptable titles? as you have? as I have? as everyone does?

and how long has it been used in passports? decades

“All we know about this member of staff is that he has introduced himself as Mx Smith, or whatever. A perfectly normal interaction.”

Nope, we know that within a very short period, this member of staff made the OP’s DD so anxious that she doesn’t want one-to-one with him. This is not a normal interaction. This is a competency situation (I’d also be worried about safeguarding).

You can’t employ a one-to-one TA whose students can’t cope with working with them.

I wouldn’t mind what title an autistic teen used for me - because I’m not a precious dickhead 🤷‍♀️

Your reading comprehension is shocking - the DVLA were FIRST to use it. In 2015.

Agree. Why has this staff member gone for this job if they are unable to sensitively handle this situation?

BuildABlah · 24/02/2023 21:35

The issue isn't the title.

The issue is the IDEOLOGY around the title.

If you mistakenly call a newly wed teacher 'Miss' she probably won't even notice, if you call your male teacher 'Mum' the class's will probably giggle and you'll be red for a few minutes.

If you call a nonbinary teacher 'Sir' he will probably call you out for it in front of the class, remind you that he is NB, that he pronouns are they/them and his title is Mx.

And then if you do it repeadly you run the risk of being labelled transphobic or hateful by your woke peers.

It's so much deeper than just a title.

And it shouldn't be allowed in schools.

My daughters Highschool have 2 of these people using this title and it infuriates me.

HIS title. The OPS daughter is having such a problem with the fact that the man in front of her, who in her head is a man therefore Mr or sir is asking for Mx that she is so anxious she doesn't want to go to school. And this is the man who is supposed to be helping her get through a school day without anxiety.

FFS.

Nope, lots of posters have told you it's nothing to do with this wide eyed innocent 'gosh it's just a title' rubbish. It's the fact that this child who needs this support is so frightened (why?! What's she been told will happen?) of getting it wrong!

Itisbetter · 24/02/2023 21:36

TAs can be changed for all sorts of reasons. If this one is this hard for her to work with that would be an excellent reason for a change.

no, the DVLA were the first to print it as an option, it has always been allowable to write it in a passport, where you write your title, not select it from a menu

Now now, @CryptoFascistMadameCholet you must know by now, facts don't count for anything, it's all feelz which trump all.
