SNP leadership campaign

I thought it would be fun for the leadership campaign to have its own thread.

According to Wikipedia, the timetable for the election is:

"Nominations opened on 16 February, and will close on 24 February. Those nominated will then be put forward as options in a ballot of party members, which will open on 13 March, and close at noon on 27 March, with the result announced on the same day by the SNP's national secretary, Lorna Finn."

So quite a short campaign. I don't completely understand how the voting works - it's not first past the post, but a "type of single transferable vote", according to Wiki, which is clear as mud.

Kate Forbes seems to have lost some key supporters by saying she was opposed to same-sex marriage, which perhaps means some of them will transfer to Ash Regan. The only other candidate is our old chum Humza Yousaf, author of one of the most deranged and authoritarian pieces of legislation, the Hate Crime and Public OrderAct, to pass through a UK legislative body in the past 100 years.

Those of you in Scotland, how do you see this playing out?

DRS is not really about glass, it's about plastic bottles. These can be recycled but only if they’re properly separated from other waste.

ArabellaScott · 26/02/2023 21:27

I see, thanks. I've only seen/heard people talking about cans and bottles, I'd presumed glass.

It all seems to have been implemented with the efficiency and practical attention to detail we've all come to expect from the coalition. govt.

'The owners of the firm that will gather & sort billions of bottles & cans under Scotland’s deposit return scheme have been condemned as a ‘big climate polluter’, responsible for more annual CO2 emissions than the entire nation of Scotland.'

From that thread.

Plenty of environmentalists talk about recycling as the least effective and important part of 'reduce, reuse, recycle', so I'm still a bit baffled why the Greens are going all in on it.

littlbrowndog · 26/02/2023 21:41

Glass is in it that’s why so many small business are kicking off

in other nations who have DRS glass is not includeD.

we have great bins in my street for glass. Where do you think we are going to have to go to put our glass stuff in and carrying it to where 🤦‍♀️

its fucking nonsense
like troll up to Tesco ? Carrying bags of glass when we have glass bins on the street

guaranteed the glass bins are not perfect as they are often full but just need the collection to be more frequent

Did everyone else apart from me know this? This is new levels of bonkersness.

Scottish ministers have yet to approach London for an internal market exemption, despite setting a deadline of Tuesday for businesses to sign up. The scheme is due to go live on August 16.

Slater told The Sunday Show on BBC1 that the scheme was “definitely going ahead” but The Times understands a request for an internal market exemption will be refused.

I'm really torn about the SNP leadership.

On one hand if Humza wins he will be bad for the party (and independence). He will try and steer the SNP in the same direction which lets face it hasn't done them or their niche causes any favours. So as a unionist and a lover of women's rights and safeguarding of children I think it wouldn't be too bad if he won in the same way Nicola's belief in TWAW brought the gift that is Isla Fisher and lots of sunlight. He could be a gift.

However if Kate Forbes won, well she isn't a fan of TWAW and I assume wouldn't take any nonsense from the crazy Greens (and I say that as a former long time Green Party voter) so that is good. But she is competent and I think independence would become more of a reality under her leadership, which as a unionist I'm not a fan of. Mind you, I wouldn't put it past Nicola and her supporters to try and scupper KF at every opportunity if she wins because I think to them the SNP isn't about independence, but about having power.

Much as I respect Ash Regan and the stance she took over the GRA I don't think she will win.

It's tough one.

guinnessguzzler · 27/03/2023 12:26

@BloodyHellKen agree completely.

Hoardasurass · 27/03/2023 14:11

Yousef won

NatashaDancing · 27/03/2023 14:12

Hurray. The most useless candidate won.

Indy is dead.

Why do you think so?

I hope so but interested in hearing more

Isla Bryson!

Isla Fisher is an Australian actress who got her start in Home and Away!

guinnessguzzler · 27/03/2023 14:25

@EdgeOfACoin That's almost as bad as when H from Steps momentarily got confused with the paedo from Lost Prophets. Whatever his sins, I don't believe H from Steps is a paedophile.

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 27/03/2023 14:29

so despite their very best attempts to discredit Kate he won 52/48% hardly a ringing endorsement

threesheets · 27/03/2023 14:36

Rainbowshit · 27/03/2023 14:12

Indy is dead.

Support will dip for a year or two but it's going nowhere and completely ridiculous to declare it's death 😂

Ha Ha, sometimes I amaze even myself with my own idiocy😂

Isla Fisher, if you are reading this I am truly sorry.

All a bit depressing. NS will take this as an endorsement of her leadership as he was touted as the continuity candidate. Plus, as a man he really doesn’t have the same insight into why these issues matter to women. Now he can happily put women in their place under the guise of ‘be kind’. It is worrying in that the GR bill and NSs leadership on this was only problematic because of the entirely coincidental timing of Isla Bryson. That’s not going to happen again.

BloodyHellKen · 27/03/2023 14:44

It's interesting that it's 52/48 percent split. Wasn't there another vote not that long ago with the same split that the SNP were up in arms about, or is this different? 🤔

@DrBlackbird You may not have seen the other thread (confusingly there is another SNP thread) where Hamza's GRR u-turn is discussed - as reported the Time today:

Humza: I would drop GRR case if Legal advice says we'll lose.

Translation:

We've taken legal advice and been told we're going to to lose so I'm going to drop the GRR but I wanted the TRA vote so I'm only telling you this now after voting has almost closed 😂

Beddfellows · 27/03/2023 15:03

The man who brought us the truly horrifying Hate Crime legislation. We can be imprisoned for 7 years for saying something not on message to our own family in our own home.

Rainbowshit · 27/03/2023 15:21

Haven't verified this but tweets seem to suggest now Humza is in the door he has confirmed he WILL challenge the section 35.

I know. The Scottish Conservatives were the only ones who opposed it (I think as with GRR most of Scottish Labour voted for it), even after they had cooperated to tone it down a lot.
Just be careful who you invite to dinner if you live in Scotland or only talk about the weather!
This must also contravene some overarching freedom of speech law in the UK. The SNP gets away with doing so much that is potentially technically beyond their powers.

So he will waste Scottish and rest of UK Taxpayers' hard-earned taxes on fighting the UK Government.
What could possibly go wrong apart from the SNP getting a shock at the ballot box?
