So many people say that the UK is uniquely bad, but it seems like the ILGA disagree...

(ilga-europe.org/report/annual-review-2023/ the report, but I haven't read it all yet)

Mermaids was targeted by an unprecedented smear campaign this year and received threats and abuse phone calls to the extent that it had to shut down its helpline for a few days. Mermaids reported that some of its funders were intimidated and had to launch a fightback fund to continue its work.

That’s a very interesting retelling of the truth.

From their press release:

”In the current climate, progressive leaders must find effective ways to tackle hate speech in all its forms,”

Until they stop the automatic “hate speech” rhetoric and start to address the fact that a significant part of the “current climate” is ongoing discussion on a clash of rights between the demands made by transactivist groups and women’s rights, there will be no resolution.

Until those things are separated out and addressed, it is impossible to say whether there is a random genuine upswing in negativity (perhaps due to wider societal anger) or whether what we are seeing is a backlash against what are seen by many as wholly unreasonable demands, which are never backed up with valid explanations.

The Guardian gets a name check for its transphobia. LMAO 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣

Louise57 · 20/02/2023 12:32

Wow, if lefty guardian is bad then that would imply that nearly the entire media establishment is rotten with it 🤣 🤣

If you mean the rainbow colours, it's the International Lesbian and Gay (and these days also bi, trans and intersex) Association. The choice of brand colours is hardly a surprise, and I think has been there since it was founded in the 1970s.

IcakethereforeIam · 20/02/2023 15:38

It was the 'Troonstraat' that caught my attention Grin

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 20/02/2023 15:49

That's the address. It means 'Throne Street' in Flemish, same as Rue du Trône.

Translation:

Waaah! The truth finally came out and showed us up for the abusive scumbags we are and it's SO UNFAAAAIR!

Florissant · 20/02/2023 18:19

I thought that there as some kind of trans genocide taking place. You mean there isn't?

Grammarnut · 20/02/2023 21:45

I found the constant refrain that 'civil society' disagrees with the government and the suggestion of pressure on the EHCR interesting. I have noticed no outpouring of desire to have men in women's sports etc. Scotland in particular is so anti the GRR that it is the terfyiest place in the UK. A terrifyingly captured organisation.

TheBiologyStupid · 20/02/2023 22:57

And anti the original GRA, of course:

Boiledbeetle · 21/02/2023 09:10

Can we start a women's group called 'civil society'? mainly just to see what the writer would use in it's place as civil society appears in the UK bit so so so many times!

ReunitedThorns · 21/02/2023 09:25

The UK always does the worst in these reports, simply because it has the most vocal pressure/lobby groups who provide the majority of evidence to these reports.

The ironic thing is most of these lobby groups are funded by the government which has allowed their growth (they bit the hand that feeds it), whereas I doubt Putin has hired the services of Mermaids to educate his soldiers about the gender identity of all the Ukrainian civilians they are killing.

Stating that the UK is as bad as Hungary, Poland and Russia in regards to LGBT rights is laughable.
