The only decent person in politics and she's been toppled by a bad choice on trans shit.

You might want to read more widely.

So what will happen to her legislation? Will any successor have the stomach for a constitutional battle with Whitehall and a fight in the courts. And if not, what about the Greens. It is (for whatever reason) an important issue for them.

I am not Scottish, so selfishly hope it gets messy causing Keir to realise he needs to shape up his act.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 15/02/2023 10:39

Oh dear, India being wrong again. Who'd a thunk it?

lechiffre55 · 15/02/2023 10:39

Her Thatcher moment :)
What a wonderful day :)

I always wonder what prompts sudden and unexpected resignations. Why now?

I am Scottish and live in Scotland.

I don't think it's one factor. It's a combination of pressure and things which have built up. The multiple accusations of mishandling funds and missing money. The fiasco with two ferries which were supposed to cost £72 million and have to date costs £500 million and are still not finished. The fact that she's beholden to the loopers in the Greens to get any legislation through parliament. The news this morning that several SNP MSPs are not backing her controversial bottle deposit scheme which was due to roll out this summer - creating a trade difference between Scotland the the rest of the UK. The Isla Bryson / Tiffany Scott stories which was for many ordinary Scots the WTF moment. The recent poll which shows support for independence at 37%.

It will either be buried quietly or someone will double down on it

Agree huffle. It’s loads of stuff

lechiffre55 · 15/02/2023 10:42

PS does anyone know if the Scottish government has actually formally legally put in a challenge to the setion 35 order from the UK government?
I'm wondering if after all the fuss what if the Scottish government quietly so no one notices doesn't bother putting the legal challange in. Especially with Sturgeon now having self immolated.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 15/02/2023 10:36

From twitter:

Nicola Sturgeon has announced she is stepping down.

Not a surprise to those of us that know what is in Stewart McDonalds emails.

Wouldn’t it be a horrible thing, if allegedly, certain very senior, most senior people in the SNP had been using trans politics issues to deliberately heave ‘stalwarts’ out the SNP membership and reduce demands for independence?

Very inconvenient if you discussed that by email.

Allegedly of course. Just hypothetical.

Sorry to be the cause of unexpected, frantic googling!

😃

She chose an unstable hill to die on- I have been expecting this for a couple of weeks.

ExistenceOptional · 15/02/2023 10:44

That is sad she is a brilliant politician.

spiderplantparty · 15/02/2023 10:44

I agree it is most likely a combination of issues. Many people have been concerned about the use of funds and loans. The bottle deposit scheme has a lot of critics (not that people are against recycling, just the scheme sounded expensive and cumbersome when we already have council ran schemes) and the cost of the ferries is eye watering. The timing of Isla Bryson couldn't have been worse.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 15/02/2023 10:45

@HufflepuffRavenclaw 37%? Wow. I hadn't realised it had gone that low.

No apology needed. One of my favourite procrastination methods hobbies used to be looking up words in paper dictionaries and getting sidetracked for ages. Nowadays, just substitute pixels for paper.

I suggest that she didn't want to face another set of questions about 'Murdergender' 😬

I agree. It’s loads of things coming together - the GRR/Trans Rapist story was the best headline grabber but there is a lot of murky stuff in lobby group funding (anti alcohol, Gender & others) and poorly thought through policy (bottle scheme) and just plain old failure to complete a project (the ferry debacle). Plus the financial irregularities between her husband and the party.

All party leaders have a limited life span, Nic’s ending is for myriad reasons, but it will go down in history as the GRR, just because those headlines (and Adam-Isla Bryson’s pink leggings) are so memorable.

True, true. There are precious few politicians willing to stick up for the rapists in women's jails.

I have a two volume Oxford Dictionary within hand's reach and I still use them. Admittedly, it's very easy to look things up online now.
