Apparently researchers should not use the terms "male" and "female" in case it leads people to believe that sex is binary. Instead "sperm-producing" and "egg-producing" should be used, or "XY/XX individual".

I've rolled my eyes so far that they're stuck looking at the back of my head.

I don't understand the difference between xx xy, and female and male. By definition they are same. Or am I missing somthing? And as a post menopausal woman what would I be? a previously egg producing person?

Wellies54 · 14/02/2023 22:27

And what are 'egg producing ' and 'sperm producing ' ? Could they perchance be binary? Once we've eliminated the words male and female, perhaps we'll invent 2 new words as a kind of shorthand to mean egg producing or sperm producing, seeing as they're a bit long winded. Hopefully this article will peak a few more people into questioning the madness!

Theunamedcat · 14/02/2023 22:27

Could solve this by testing everyone to see if they are xx or xy it would create jobs and finally solve the "lady brain" theory

Says it’s all due to a Twitter rant.
I wish Twitter had never existed. It is like an endless spout of raw sewage.

ShireWifeofNigelFarage · 14/02/2023 22:34

Don’t use these 2 category names…

use these 2 category names!

🤦‍♀️

titchy · 14/02/2023 22:41

Maybe they've redefined the word 'binary'? 🤷‍♀️

Doyoumind · 14/02/2023 22:54

But what do you call people who don't produce eggs - for whatever reason - but have a uterus? And will they be referring to egg or sperm producing mice or is it just us humans who aren't allowed to talk about the role of biological sex in reproduction?

Fenlandia · 14/02/2023 22:56

How does this work in ecology then? Trees don't lay eggs.

Shelefttheweb · 14/02/2023 22:59

It wasn’t written by any sort of biologist if they think xx/xy can replace female/male.

Bit exclusionary to the people who actually have unusual chromosomal arrangements.

True aren’t many birds ZZ male and ZW female?

I was thinking more about crocodile, aphids, etc

And won’t anyone think of the poor electrician and plumber?!

Birds, eusocial and other partially-pathenongenic insects, reptiles that use a heat-dependent rather than chromosomal mechanism, European pond turtles (a fascinating hybrid system), plants, platypuses (bucketloads of chormosomes)...

Yeah that too!

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 14/02/2023 23:09

😆😆

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 14/02/2023 23:12

Given the variety of mechanisms that make egg/sperm and XX/XY far too limited, I suggest the logical alternative to male/female is 0/1.

Shelefttheweb · 14/02/2023 23:14

I notice they also want to rule out non-native (as in non-native plants) and replace it with ‘new arrivals’. Though strangely they don’t seem to object to ‘indigenous’ which you would think they should on this basis.

And ‘invasive’ should now be ‘nuisance’ - ‘the Russian army is being a nuisance in Ukraine’ (ok that is my example not theirs).

Yes in sea turtles the hotter eggs become female and the cooler eggs become male.

Shelefttheweb · 14/02/2023 23:20

Do these so-called ‘biologists’ enlighten us as to what the other gametes are? Egg/sperm seems very binary.

ShireWifeofNigelFarage · 14/02/2023 23:25

Spegg.

Obvs.

I bring evidence for my assertion:

Shelefttheweb · 14/02/2023 23:43

To be a spectrum we need the range of intermediary states. What is the name of the gamete that’s falls two thirds of the way along from sperg to spegg?

WishingMyLifeAway · 14/02/2023 23:54

What sort of scientists are these? Pseudoscientists?
