Batshit biologists

Apparently researchers should not use the terms "male" and "female" in case it leads people to believe that sex is binary. Instead "sperm-producing" and "egg-producing" should be used, or "XY/XX individual".

I've rolled my eyes so far that they're stuck looking at the back of my head.

To be a spectrum we need the range of intermediary states. What is the name of the gamete that’s falls two thirds of the way along from sperg to spegg?

Hmmm. We are definitely past 5th grade biology now!

Sperm, Sperg, Spereg, Speregg, Spegg, Egg?

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 15/02/2023 00:01

Not biologists, judging by their reported misunderstandings of assorted evolutionary concepts.

Maybe they just identify as scientists.

aloris · 15/02/2023 01:12

Unfortunately, silliness like this does nothing more than decrease public trust in science. It's sad because the best way to recruit young people into science is to reinforce that it is simple, logical, reasonable, and they can do it. Changing the jargon to fulfill political correctness makes it seem confusing, complicated, irrational, and just way too difficult.

I believe male and female are to be replaced as trans activists want them to refer to gender identity so that all trans women are female and all trans men are male. As that leaves no word for biological sex, the use of XX and XY is proposed as an alternative which is excluding all DSD individuals who are also almost entirely of one sex or the other.

I read some of this to a friend who refused to believe it wasn't a parody! Peaked her by pure accident when I assured her that all this is real.

Double-blind random trials can't be called that anymore! And we probably should not say things like 'running commentary' as it excludes people who can't run, and we shouldn't use 'see', 'hear', or 'touch' in abstract language as they exclude people with difficulties concerning one or more senses.

I am going to have so many new proposals for their list of topics! Lots of material from ageism, classism, etc. available for the eagle-eyed.

@ShireWifeofNigelFarage

'Sperm, Sperg, Spereg, Speregg, Spegg, Egg?'

I think it continues with Meringue, Omelette and culminates with Fabergé.

FatSealSmugSoup · 15/02/2023 06:40

I like your thread title - and it’s also accurate. Even your poo knows your sex. No amount of trachea shaving or surgery is going to “upgrade” your poo. The skids in your underwear will out you.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 15/02/2023 07:13

Have those biologists managed to stop all the male gamete production the hazel and birch trees have just started? What about the willows?

It would be quite handy, but I think I'll stock up on antihistamines just in case.

Switchwitch · 15/02/2023 07:18

I bet someone's put the word count up in the lancet so now they're grappling for ways to increase the length of their articles.

I also hate it when it's reported 'scientists say that...' #notallscientists

PomegranateOfPersephone · 15/02/2023 07:26

Do women produce eggs? We have all the eggs we are ever going to have when we are still inside our own mothers. Some of those eggs will ripen during our fertile years but we never make more. Men produce sperm on a 6 weekly cycle. Biology is amazing, our bodies are amazing, what a shame to obscure the many and varied differences between men and women’s bodies and reproductive roles instead of marvelling at them and celebrating them. Gender identity ideology seems to be ushering in a new dark ages when all knowledge and discussion of human reproductive differences will be taboo.

Helleofabore · 15/02/2023 07:29

Researchers studying ecology and evolutionary biology should be encouraged to use terms such as “sperm-producing” or “egg producing” or “XY/XX individual” to avoid “emphasising hetero-normative views”, experts say.

Extraordinary to see it, isn’t it? It is like they barely understand what inclusion is .

BoredOfThisMansWorld · 15/02/2023 07:33

The biologists are deluded if they think this will placate TRAs. If we'd adopted this approach, or wholeheartedly accepted "vulva havers" when they first appropriated the word "woman", TRAs would not have stayed happy. I've already seen males whining that young women were using "AFAB" as a way of excluding transwomen.

AlisonDonut · 15/02/2023 07:36

Hang on. If I don't produce eggs any more, and I never produced sperm...what am I?

BoredOfThisMansWorld · 15/02/2023 07:39

I also find the use of the phrase "hetero normative" enraging, outside of gay people describing their personal experience.

Heterosexuality is a fucked up system where women are sexually attracted to the class which opresses them. To simplistically assume "hetero normative" is good for women, bad for trans people, is to be wilfully ignorant of the history of female opression.

Shelefttheweb · Yesterday 22:59

It wasn’t written by any sort of biologist if they think xx/xy can replace female/male.

And what about birds, with their ZW chromosomes? Why do they want to cancel birds?

JustSpeculation · 15/02/2023 07:59

This thread is nothing but a display of rationality deliberately oppressing margnalised identities. It's not what things are which is important. It's how we talk about them. It has been decided that male and female are terms that will not used, and any attempt to question this decision is, well, generally phobic. Sort of panphobic, I suppose. The excessive use of reason is offensive. As the sage McGrath so eloquently put it:

"Science is an irredeemably white, patriarchal, cisnormative fiction that exists only to disempower marginalised identities."

SinnerBoy · 15/02/2023 07:59

The words “male” and “female” should be phased out in science because they reinforce ideas that sex is binary, scientists have suggested.

Dear me, it's not an idea, it's a fact. Come on, Telegraph, FFS!

hryllilegur · 15/02/2023 08:05

But that argument makes no logical sense.

egg producing and sperm
producing are a binary too… they’re mutually exclusive categories in humans.

it’s just using less common language to express the same binary.

Sperm producers cannot identify into egg producing.

So whose interests is this ridiculous suggestion supposed to help?

‘It has been decided’.

By one project focusing on ‘inclusive language’. And anyone questioning this - totally undemocratic - decision is ‘phobic’.

Reality does matter. Even if some people aren’t happy about it.

hryllilegur · 15/02/2023 08:10

Most science is not interested in human identities. Marginalised or not.

The sage McGrath should maybe read more science.

Helleofabore · 15/02/2023 08:11

The excessive use of reason is offensive.

Yes. It does seem to be so.

I do remember an extreme activist poster trying to frame one of my posts this way a couple of years ago. That brings back memories.

Does anyone have an archive link so I can read this? Ta!

This is exactly it.

"Progress" has no end.

It's not the actual words that bother them, it's the fact those words define separate things. We arent allowed to have a word that only applies to us.

So if these suggestions were accepted you will see men 'identifying as' XX. They didn't stop at 'woman' and have now come for 'female'. Just ask India Willougby's cervix.

I am wondering what the point of any science is any more. If they follow this to its logical conclusion, Y will ID as X and so everyone will be XX and the whole basis of science ceases to be relevant to humans.

They are woke wanking themselves out of a job/career/future.

Signalbox · 15/02/2023 08:33

They’ve fully colonised the word “woman” and now they’re coming for “female”. This is why the argument that “man” and “woman” are social categories and “male” and “female” are biological categories is a dangerous position. TRAs want all of the words to define feelings rather than fact. Soon the only way women will be able to define themselves separately from men is to use AFAB but this will not be a category that is protected in law from discrimination.
