Apparently researchers should not use the terms "male" and "female" in case it leads people to believe that sex is binary. Instead "sperm-producing" and "egg-producing" should be used, or "XY/XX individual".

I've rolled my eyes so far that they're stuck looking at the back of my head.

This thread is nothing but a display of rationality deliberately oppressing margnalised identities. It's not what things are which is important. It's how we talk about them. It has been decided that male and female are terms that will not used, and any attempt to question this decision is, well, generally phobic. Sort of panphobic, I suppose. The excessive use of reason is offensive. As the sage McGrath so eloquently put it:

"Science is an irredeemably white, patriarchal, cisnormative fiction that exists only to disempower marginalised identities."

Nice attempt at Poe’s Law!

Circuses reply on bodily strength and sex differences for performances. But are totally captured. Last time I looked at a discussion in a group on fb they were calling women XX people and men XY people to deal with the conundrum that sex matters but feelz and menz too. 🙄

ToBeOrNotToBee · 15/02/2023 08:39

And what happens to the intersex male and females, they're no longer human I take it.

And those of us females that do not produce eggs, maybe pre-menarche and post-menopause, do we suddenly only come into existence when our periods start and cease to exist when they end.

And what of the chaps who no longer produce sperm, say retained testes, or needed an op to remove them, I'm sure they love no longer being called men.

Jesus christ, the mental gymnastics when we could just use the words male and female.

The Telegraph have blown a dog whistle and got everyone's hackles up/eyes rolling. The 'experts' it refers to are the EEB Language Project, it is by no means all biologists and ecologists.

This is them, www.eeblanguageproject.com/

And these are some of the terms they're raising as problematical, www.eeblanguageproject.com/repository

hryllilegur · 15/02/2023 08:51

Can we just recognise that the EEB language project is just a self selecting group of academics who’ve got a bit of money from somewhere (and I suspect money for this kind of activity is not hard to find in North America) and have decided to make pronouncements about what kind of language people are allowed to use.

It’s the academic equivalent of social media influencing.

This isn’t ‘science’ at all.

Signalbox · 15/02/2023 08:56

This isn’t ‘science’ at all.

I think that goes without saying.

hryllilegur · 15/02/2023 08:57

It is incredibly easy for a group of academic with grandiose ambitions to decide to give their clique a fancy sounding name, build a website and write a ‘position paper’.

It doesn’t mean what they’re saying is of any importance.

Aposterhasnoname · 15/02/2023 08:58

But, but, sperm producing/egg producing and xx/xy individual are both binary terms.

Please someone make it make sense.

DogInATent · 15/02/2023 08:59

It’s the academic equivalent of social media influencing.
Exactly.

Looking at their list, I can see a couple of terms concepts that I agree (as someone with a background in ecology) are problematical or where the term they suggest is more accurate - although not for the reasons of 'triggering' that they are tending to raise.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 15/02/2023 09:23

We have all the eggs we are ever going to have when we are still inside our own mothers. Some of those eggs will ripen during our fertile years but we never make more.

Side note, but there is now some reinvestigation of this. As with most aspects of female health it seems conclusions may have been jumped to instead of properly tested. We're definitely born with most of our eggs, but there's a possibility that we can add a bit to the stock later.

Aspergirl77 · 15/02/2023 09:39

I note the EEB language project propose replacing ‘gypsy’ with ‘spongy moth’. I wonder how the traveller community feel about that!!

Biologists would call it Lymantria dispar dispar.
Common names are only for public convenience.

But do you really have to wonder?

@ShireWifeofNigelFarage

'Sperm, Sperg, Spereg, Speregg, Spegg, Egg?'

I think it continues with Meringue, Omelette and culminates with Fabergé.

Well, in geese, of course, we would have 'Sperm, Sperg, Spereg, Speregg, Spegg, Egg, Gold.

Where does Cadbury Creme fit in to the spectrum?

Indeed, where does the whole spectrum of chocolate eggs currently on display in your local supermarket fit into the, er, spectrum?

CloudPop · 15/02/2023 10:03

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 15/02/2023 00:01

Not biologists, judging by their reported misunderstandings of assorted evolutionary concepts.

Maybe they just identify as scientists.

Seems so.

I’m gonna have to go buy a shitty little Buttons egg or something now - it’s feeling quite spring-like today!

Shelefttheweb · 14/02/2023 23:07

And won’t anyone think of the poor electrician and plumber?!

Exactly.
there are masses of tool videos on YouTube talking about male bits and female bits.
for real. Not porn.
i taught engineers and mechanics, but cant be bothered to correct my «i’s».

Musomama1 · 15/02/2023 11:23

No XX no cry
You make me feel like a natural XX
I'm every XX
XY I feel like a XX..... I could do this all day.

Where activism and ideology trumps science. Sex IS a binary, gender stereotypes are not real, sigh.

FrancescaContini · 15/02/2023 11:25

But what they’re suggesting instead is still a binary “option”. And a stupid one, to boot.

🤦‍♀️ are these people “real” scientists?

hryllilegur · 15/02/2023 11:28

FrancescaContini · 15/02/2023 11:25

Yes. It’s still a binary.

And, actually, one that is more challenging to those who wish to redefine sex.

Because humans produce eggs (large gametes) or sperm (small gametes). Even if there is biological dysfunction to that process, it’s one or the other.

You cannot become an egg producer. No matter how much you might want to.

And the egg production part really matters in understanding many things in life.

So, other than being more convoluted than male/female, what is the point?

An inconvenience.

It doesn’t mean what they’re saying is of any importance.

But it is important. It’s all whittling away at reality, a reality in which women have a central, irreplaceable role in human biology, and the continuation of the species. Drip, drip , drip and suddenly there is a hole in the corner stone, and the arch falls.
