Why intelligent people belief stupid things

This has come up on other threads, but I found this article on the topic particularly interesting:

The writer has come up with the concept of Fashionably Irrational Beliefs - FIBs for short (naturally).

This is a great quote, and is a point I sometimes make (though not as well):

"Labyrinthine sophistry like 'sex is a spectrum' prevails among cognitively sophisticated cultural elites, including those who should know better such as biologists, but it’s rarer among the common people, who lack the capacity for mental gymnastics required to accept such elaborate delusions."

Ok. So confirmed on Twitter what I already knew from the article

The quote about "the common people" is giving me superiority vibes. That, along with the overly flowery language for no apparent reason, makes me feel like the author is a pretentious twat. No idea about the article because I can't bring myself to read it after being subjected to that one quote.

My Catholic education convinced me at an early age that intelligent people can believe any old nonsense if it suits them, and can mistreat others very badly if they disagree.

Some people prefer to be part of the crowd than right, and others like to have an excuse to be a bully.

There are only two sexes, and those with a DSD have either a female DSD or a male DSD. There are no "in between" sexes.
