So, the Brit Awards are now 'gender neutral' and there is no category for Best Male/Best Female.

In 2023 there were no female nominations.

Brit Awards 2023: Why are no women nominated for best artist? www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-64264069

Im not getting into the trans debate.....this to me is different and eroding women's rights and successes.

That’s what ‘Gender Neutral’ does - if you don’t explicitly say ‘women’ and ‘female’ everything resets to the ‘default male’.

And while I appreciate your optimism at avoiding the trans debate, this wouldn’t have happened if Sam Smith hadn’t declared samself non-eligible for the male category.

ShireWifeofNigelFarage · 12/02/2023 16:06

That Florence and the Machine and all the other eligible for nomination women were thrown under the bus for the benefit of this literally inflated Nonbinaryperson’s ego is infuriating.

Still, Sam samself will be eligible for nomination next year, so I wait with baited breath as to that works out for they.

(them will probably just go back to him on a whim and render this whole sorry episode a complete waste of everyone’s time).

default male thinking exists and is still harming women.

Pirateships · 12/02/2023 16:12

Fair play to Harry he gave a shout out to the women who missed out, hopefully he carries on pushing back on these unfair changes in the industry. Nice of wet leg (eurgh hate the name) for thanking women specifically.

Weallgottachangesometime · 12/02/2023 16:15

Why call it gender neutral and not mixed sex?

It’s all male, nothing mixed sex about it!

KangarooKenny · 12/02/2023 16:21

Why don’t they just have a best male, female and other ? Gives 3 people the chance of a prize.

Weallgottachangesometime · 12/02/2023 16:22

I know there were only males nominated this year, but I mean I find the phrasing gender neutral a bit misleading because gender was never the issue. Males dominating the categories was the reason for separate sex categories. So I feel like saying mixed sex highlights that more.

It’s quite hard to quality for nomination (it’s based on a certain number of releases in a fixed period, iirc) and this year only one person would’ve qualified for nomination in the ‘other’ category.

Easiest just point out that male and female are sexes not genders and Sam Smith can identify as whatever Sam fancies but Sam will always be male, so Sam can stay in the male category (or just graciously refuse thems nomination).

(or just graciously refuse thems nomination).

Which afaik they didn't get anyway.
Maybe the Brits could revert to the main categories being divided by sex and add a 'silliest outfit' award.

This is the 'gender' debate. Which is part of the trans debate. Soz. You can't really have one without the other, they are inextricably intertwined.

Now, if we were all going to operate on the basis of 'sex', instead, that would be a different matter.

Not eligible this year (no album released in the qualifying period)

Them will be eligible next year tho.

Sam Smith was the one who pushed for gender neutral awards categories. Not for an additional category to be added but for the awards in general to be gender neutral. The Brit Awards specifically cite Sam Smith as the impetus for this change -

www.theguardian.com/music/2021/mar/12/sam-smith-gender-2021-brit-awards

But when the inevitable happens and women are entirely overlooked for the awards, Sam Smith then expresses shock at the consequence of they's actions -

www.nme.com/news/music/sam-smith-responds-to-backlash-over-male-dominated-brits-best-artist-category-3385137

Who could possibly have forseen it? (apart from everyone who did).

Someone on Twitter said it looked it Sam was stitched into a skin tight suit and then farted with disastrous results 😄

The Florence album, Dance Fever, is a masterpiece ... not one bad track it's genius from start to finish and she should have won all the awards.

bellinisurge · 12/02/2023 17:00

Reading about it on the BBC. Bloody frightened young women artists hoping for better representation of "womenandnonbinary" artists. Women are over 50% of the fucking population and non-binary is just narcissistic bullshit. I'm so sorry that they have been cowed by the genderwoowoo.

Indeed. Or, rather, this is what happens when we erase all references to the female sex. In all sorts of contexts where the goal is to correct for the past or present discrimination against vulva persons, a preponderance of penis persons will return. This applies to getting women into IT or STEM fields, to women's sports etc. A consequence of the gender identity ideology is that women's rights will go backward.

EsmaCannonball · 12/02/2023 17:36

All the dreary, middle-of-the road, commercial pop acts wearing crazy costumes or getting other women to vomit on them on stage seem to be a metaphor for the age we are in. They should put as much effort into making their music alternative.

This. Because you have to wind back the logic of how we got to this point which is not too hard You may feel uncomfortable with the answer, but it was down to Queer Theory basically.

A better solution to make accomodation for that particular religion is to offer a third open category.

bellinisurge · 12/02/2023 20:08

This is connected to the gender identity mania because its whole purpose is to replace sex with gender - the two are not the same. And then by claiming something is gender neutral, it basically squashes women's unique spaces . Including music award categories. Or you say it is gender specific and not sex specific. In which case it becomes mixed sex. Which inevitably favours men.
