Birth gender?

WTF is a birth gender?

The BBC said yesterday about gender assigned at birth in the same context.

It's meaningless. Gender has no meaning in the law in England & Wales, probably Scotland too.

pattihews · 10/02/2023 10:49

They've caught that from Evan Davies on PM, and I've just given the BBC a piece of my mind and reminded them that promoting ideologies, rather than scientific fact, is against their charter.

It feels like a desperate last stand of the genderists, to me. Slipping the word in whenever they can.

Signalbox · 10/02/2023 10:57

Presumably they're just trying to avoid using the term "biological sex" because that would be "transphobic".

jellyfrizz · 10/02/2023 11:04

Times & Independent also refering to 'birth gender' or 'gender at birth'.

Yahoo news has "establishment commensurate with their birth gender" as a quote.

Did the Scottish Prison Service actually use the term birth gender?

To answer my own question, it appears so:

In a letter to Justice Secretary Keith Brown, the SPS Chief Executive Teresa Medhurst said decisions around Bryson “were in keeping with existing SPS policies and procedures.”
She said the prison service had also committed to “an urgent case review of all transgender women currently managed within the prison estate.”
Ms Medhurst added: “Until these reviews are complete, any transgender person currently in custody and who has any history of violence against women – including sexual offences – will not be relocated from the male to the female estate.
“In addition, any newly convicted or remanded transgender prisoner will initially be placed in an establishment commensurate with their birth gender."...

establishment commensurate with their birth gender

I think this is what I heard on radio 4 yesterday. Are they all quoting from a press release?

jellyfrizz · 10/02/2023 11:10

I think it's from Medhurst's letter.

Which doesn't really provide any clarity at all. Because what is a birth gender?

I thought so too.

We heard it on Radio 4 yesterday evening while cooking dinner and every time I heard "gender" I shouted "SEX!" - my family are quite used to this, BTW.

ImperfectAlf · 10/02/2023 11:17

@Kucinghitam

'We heard it on Radio 4 yesterday evening while cooking dinner and every time I heard "gender" I shouted "SEX!" - my family are quite used to this, BTW.'

Same in this house, although it's usually gd (7) and gd3 chiming in too.

Get them early! 😁

ShireWifeofNigelFarage · 10/02/2023 11:26

Does anyone else feel like stamping about shouting ‘SEX SEX SEX you mealy mouthed cowards!’ or is that just me?

HipTightOnions · 10/02/2023 11:27

Do these journalists not consider even for a moment whether the words coming out of their mouths actually make sense?

HipTightOnions · 10/02/2023 11:27

It's a direct quote from SPS Chief Executive Teresa Medhurst's letter to Justice Secretary Keith Brown.

I don't see how anybody can still be pretending that sex and gender are synonyms, which may be used interchangeably. Not after the mass of reportage on the subject, over the last couple of weeks.

HipTightOnions · 10/02/2023 11:35

Oh I didn't realise they were explicitly quoting.

Doesn't make sense either way.

Glad to know I'm not the only one shouting SEX at the radio!

Yes, everytime I hear gender where sex would be correct. My neighbours must think there is something wrong with me.

howmanybicycles · 12/02/2023 23:42

I've already complained about this. It breaches their own style guide. It was a direct quote from the nonsense which the SPS rep said but then the BBC need to make that clear rather than suggesting that this was actually a statement with any inherent meaning.

Wauden · 06/04/2023 17:02

Glad that I am not the only one shouting 'sex' at the tv and radio!

Wauden · 06/04/2023 17:07

A birth gender is a newborn baby who assigns themselves whatever sex they want to. Its their right otherwise its literal violence.

nepeta · 06/04/2023 18:08

Just another attempt to erase the concept of biological sex, the idea that what was observed at birth might be wrong, not only for the vanishingly small percentage of infants with DSD whose sex cannot be easily visually observed.

This approach benefits transgender advocates, and it harms many others, particularly anyone trying to address sex-based oppression in this world. Why don't women and girls in Afghanistan just identify out of their oppression? If we can't even mention the reason for their oppression, we are not going to have effective feminism in the future.

maranella · 06/04/2023 18:11

When the fucking NHS asks you for your 'gender' on forms now, rather than sex, this is the nonsense we have to endure. You'd think that a bunch of medics would know the difference, but apparently they don't.

Skyellaskerry · 06/04/2023 22:30

And gender reveals, gender pay gap reports, etc. I’m another one picking up incorrect language more and more and talking back to the radio

thatsn0tmyname · 06/04/2023 22:42

This is infuriating. I emailed Pampers nappies the other day because their website was a mess of 'sex' and ' gender'. Teaching my A level biologists about amniocentesis and CVS and a lot of medical websites boasting the credentials of their experts can't get flipping sex and gender right.

Ofcourseshecan · 07/04/2023 00:05

Birth gender is easily observed. Girls are born wearing eyeshadow and lipstick. Boys are born with big butch tattoos. Some say these all wear off within the first few days, but I suspect GC parents wash them off.

I hope this helps clarify the issue.

Bienemajas · 07/04/2023 17:51

How about biological gender? The gender you were conceived as - male or female?

In most languages other than English that is the term used to describe malenesses or femalenesses
