Anti transgender activist?

We were scrolling telly to watch tonight and landed on an old Alan Partridge episode. I said to DH ooh that’s Graham Linehan, I follow him on Twitter, he’s great on women’s rights etc (I’m very ‘out’ on this debate in RL so he knew what I meant). He didn’t recognise him so we googled. This is Wikipedia. Isn’t this slander or libel or whichever?

Who moderates wiki and why is this allowed?

Anti transgender activist?

Afaik no one formally moderates Wikipedia.
Pages start off open to anyone who wants to contribute or edit them (that being the point of a wiki) ; some contentious ones get locked and have access limited. Glinner's page looks to be 'semi-protected' - if you click the padlock symbol near the top right you can see what that means.

If you don’t like Wikipedia, you’ll like his Rational Wiki page even less…

The cofounder of Wikipedia has spoken out about how it’s no longer fit for purpose:

Holy fucking Jesus Christ in a bucket. So much regard for him for staying true to his words through all this.

Rational wiki is just some basement dwelling new atheist types that really need a shower and some brisk outdoor activity.

😱 that’s just…no words. How is this ok? I know we tell students that wiki is not a source but the general public think it is. This is not ok. What can we do? I’m not often shocked but the bias is, well, shocking.

It’s not OK, but the internet is run by ideological authoritarians who identify as liberal and we all have to sift through the bullshit as best we can!

Was watching Glenn Greenwald the other day. The episode was primarily about AI and ChatGPT in particular, but he started off using Wikipedia as an example of the problem - incredibly biased lists of "approved" and "unapproved" sources, including deference to establishment ones. And that sort of filtering is being forcibly applied to ChatGPT.

NecessaryScene · 10/02/2023 06:37

Apparently Rumble links are auto-blocked. In case it doesn't come back, I was pointing people to Glenn Greenwald's System Update #36 on there - primarily about ChatGPT but he starts off demonstrating Wikipedia's explicit authoritarian ideological blinkers, there in black and white in its list of "approved" and "unapproved" sources.

And that is being clearly replicated even more strongly with the filters being applied to ChatGPT.

Shit. I also need a shower and brisk outdoor activity but I don't have a basement to blame 😳

Boiledbeetle · 10/02/2023 08:56

Wikipedia can't be trusted these days. It's fine for finding the century a song or nursery rhyme was popular, but past that it's no longer fit for purpose.

zanahoria · 10/02/2023 12:53

I just checked out Jk Rowling's page

They seem a lot less harsh on someone who can afford decent lawyers.

If you follow the wiki link for anti-transgender you are sent here:

Just no.

RealityFan · 09/09/2023 17:55

I've just come across something so disgusting.

Glinner was invited to Tory Conference this year, but it was originally rescinded because...Greater Manchester Police applied a "black mark" to him.

Overturned when the IEA vouched for him.

What. The. Actual. Fuck. ???!!!

I really, really don't want to believe our civic institutions are captured, certainly not to this level. But the evidence is now incontrovertible.

From the arrests for stickering and graffiti. And photographing of. And the lack of action when women are assaulted by men at meets.

And now this. A bona fide national treasure and in time revealed human rights champion. Branded by the police as an undesirable, a transphobic risk, a hate crime purveyor.

What? In the same boat as our favourite racists and sexists from the past? It seems so.

LondonLass91 · 09/09/2023 18:24

Yes it is fucking disgraceful isn't it, the police treat women - and our supporting men - as witches these days.

And wikipedia still states the Hero Linehan is an anti transgender campaigner. People change it, with seconds it gets changed back.

RealityFan · 09/09/2023 18:53

Go. And. Clear. Up. Some. Murders. Assaults. Burglaries. Rapes. DV. Shoplifting. Car. Crime.

Stop. Harassing. Us. For. Non. Crimes.

Oh, and while you're at it, root out the ingrained misogyny in your ranks.

Is that too much to ask?

at the same time wiki may not be perfect, but then how is the main stream media any different ?

MmePoppySeedDefage · 10/09/2023 07:00

Is there any more information about the Tory conference and GMP? It seems unbelievable - but we are getting used to that with women being spoken to for taking photos...
