Janice Turner, the Times: time to stop calling male rapists 'she'

At the weekend (I think) Janice Turner wrote an article in which she referred to Adam Graham/ Isla Bruson as he throughout. In her column today she (third item down, He or She?) explains that the Ipso code is voluntary and reveals that Ipso links 'for more information' to nine pro-trans organisations and charities, but not to Sex Matters or any women's org.

Let's hope this is the beginning of the end of female penis. Article here:

How many years is it since Maria Maclachlan was forced to call her male attacker 'she'? Shame on Ipso, shame on the judiciary.

I didn't realise IPSO was voluntary. The big issue is going to be getting it past editors though. And I say that from personal experience. I worked with an editor who changed "1 in 100 women" to "1 in 100 people" and refused to change it back even when I pointed out the obvious inaccuracy.

Janice Turner says it's voluntary. Which begs the question, if it's voluntary why have all the main players adopted it? Sounds as if the blokes on Today have had enough and are chancing the wrath of the LGBTQIA++++ staff network by saying 'man or woman, you decide' when talking of Graham/ Bryson.

Finally Ipso links “for more information” to nine trans charities, including Stonewall and Trans Media Watch. But not to any feminist organisation such as Sex Matters or Keep Prisons Single Sex which hold different views. In both English and Scottish law, rape is penetration with a penis, a male crime. Refusing to call a rapist a woman should be a red line.

Foiled again
I open my bedroom door every morning to find my cats sitting like courtiers in an anteroom awaiting an audience. What they want as they chase me downstairs is “wet food”. (The very phrase makes me gag.)
Cat food no longer comes in tins which stink up the fridge, but one-meal pouches. My main criterion for buying them is not whether my cats enjoy what they contain — they eat putrid squirrels so chicken is a treat — but how quickly I can serve them. Does ripping the foil make the vile fishy “juice” squirt on to my fingers? Does the meaty slurry slide effortlessly out in one glob or do I have to run my fingers along the length, teasing out cubes? The nature of the diced beast is immaterial: it smells the same.

No feminist organisations? What a surprise! Not

And she even talks sense on 🐱 food!

Oh I think she’s talking nonsense on cat food. You can still get tins and they are cheaper and more recyclable than pouches. Use a Nutella lid and it won’t stink out the fridge. And you can serve it with a fork so no need for contact with fingers.

She is however bang on on pronouns.

nepeta · 02/02/2023 17:45

The pronouns-question is part and parcel of the currently trending view that people are what they say they are, though it's only applied to some things such as gender identity (a secular religious belief), and not, for instance, to the question whether Bryson is innocent if Bryson says so.

I have toyed with the idea of telling people that I am an opera singer (small animals run away when I sing, holding their ears with their paws), just because I say so, and that this should be somehow honoured, at least in social circles.

It’s asides like this that keep me on MN. All of life is here.

Janice talking sense, as usual.

Yeah, you want to tell my Lord Fluff he's getting the same meal twice? 😬

I'll just be sorting out the antiseptic and plasters for you. 😁

BlackForestCake · 02/02/2023 19:26

Lots of industries have a voluntary regulation scheme. The thinking is that if they can self-regulate, the government will not impose statutory regulation which might be stricter.

You spoil that cat, Beetle.

Oh no. I do no such thing.

I merely immediately acquiesce whenever the master of the house meows "jump".

Which is the very valid reason for why I'm currently in bed with a snoring cat on top of me.

Honest.

Not afraid to use 'he' and 'claims to be a woman'.
