Rays of light in the creative industries?

MsDemeanors · 01/02/2023 23:25

I work in two creative industries -- one in particular was entirely captured by gender ideology. Its expression on Twitter drove me almost entirely off the platform (the division between the she/theys and the give/overs became impossible to navigate. There was NO chance of polite exchanges between former friends.)

BUT... I've paid a rare visit to my account today and noticed that a large number of people who previously had proudly and loudly displayed pronouns in their bios (along with frequent declarations of trans support) have quietly ... cut the pronouns and turned the support volume down - or even off. And even those who do still tweet their TWAW mantras aren't getting the number of likes they would have done a year or two ago. Nowhere NEAR.

Are these more rays of sunlight? Am I deluding myself? I have a daughter at uni who has a UTI at the moment -- mainly because she has avoided using the "gender neutral" toilets scattered all over the campus and held on for unhealthy amounts of time. She is as GC as me and has to navigate this crap endlessly. I don't know how she does it. I just want her not to have to KEEP on doing it.

The only thing that keeps me going is reading the threads here. Reading so many passionate, articulate, well-informed women clarifying and edifying and fighting for better times ahead.

I think you're right. It's becoming harder to openly parrot uncritical approval as the terrible things happening to children become apparent and all the "things that never happen" not only happen on a daily basis, but are finally being reported by much of the press.
But the misogyny and hatred for women is now very well embedded in politics and society so I suspect reinstating women's right and much of the now eroded child safeguarding will take a while.

Completely off topic OP but send your DD some d-mannose (supplement that's brilliant for UTI's, available at Holland & Barrett and online) so at least she isn't suffering more than she needs to. Makes me bloody angry she's in that position though Angry

Agreed, MrsOvertonsWindow, even if we are on the road out, it's not going to be a short one. I think there will be more tragedies we have to witness before the tentacles can be unclamped from our rights. But I'm thankful for any glimmers.

And thank you so much, Irrelevantdata, that's a great tip. But YES to the anger. I have to try not to think of it too much late at night or I can't sleep for the fury. (Looks at clock...Um...oops)

I had a ray of hope from my DD who is currently doing a year at uni in California. Today she had a lecture/class and had mentioned before her nutrition professor is really cool and very eccentric. Today she was introducing the stuff they’d cover this semester and mentioned all references to research on gender differences would be only referring to biological sex and she couldn’t be dealing with any other way of talking about it so if that was going to be a problem for anyone then she suggested they take another class!

In uni

In California

And a female professor! 🥳🫶🏻🤘🏻💪🏻👏🏻

Sounds like one lecturer who has had enough of the shit!

Bloody HELL PerkyBlinder! That is a proper torch blaze of hope-filled light! That's amazing. Did you DD report how that was received by the rest of the class?

Bring on those rays...

I'm not sure they all ever fell for it. We've just finished watching The Kominsky Method - the last season was made in 2021 and has a very funny bit totally sending up neopronouns and 'nonbinaries'.

PerkyBlinder · 02/02/2023 01:10

@MsDemeanors - I think she said there were a few people who sort of glanced about a bit in the way you do when something surprising has happened but no major drama seems to have occurred. It probably helps that it’s a scientific class. My dd said it was so refreshing she was just so blunt.

Also realised after I’d posted that the thread is about the creative industries so sorry to derail slightly!

MsDemeanors · 02/02/2023 01:23

PerkyBlinder - thanks so much for the update that is SO good to hear. And not a derail at all I'm really just looking for other rays of light! It's been particularly terrifying to hear about some science teachers being made to dance to the dissonant gender ideology tune. Still can't get over that the professor said that in California. There really is hope.

ErrolTheDragon We LOVED The Kominsky Method and you're reminding me I'd like to re-watch it. Thank you. And I'm not sure when it was made but there was a similar (and very funny) pronoun joke in a Charles Paris series episode with Bill Nighy. Think it was in Episode 2 of A Doubtful Death (currently available on BBC Sounds if you fancy a listen!)

Sorry about the crossed through text -- not intended and not sure how I managed that (possibly late night deadline meeting brain).
