Another job I can't apply for...

I'm job hunting and OMG it's so difficult.

Anyone with pronouns in their signature is a def no.

Anyway great job, great charity, looked at JD and saw they completely missed out sex (changed it to gender).

This is a charity to get youngsters into sport!

Can't be assed emailing and letting them know how wrong they've got it!

I know I should but I'm just so cheesed off with it all.

Well you don’t seem to know the purpose of the charity.

while I agree to an extent with the usage of sex/gender, some still use them interchangeably.

so is this charity using gender to mean sex, or do they mean gender in the whole sense?

Photo is too blurry to read OP - but I agree with you on the principle.

BlueBooh · 01/02/2023 11:30

Sorry for blurry photo but yes they are using gender instead of sex in the protected characteristics.

If that's meant to be a list of EA characteristics, there are 2 errors - not just sex -> gender, but also gender reassignment -> gender identity.

It’s a copy-and-paste policy - cribbed from something else for ease. Don’t let it put you off. If you get the job, change it from the inside. Should be very easy to do in the sports context.

I think part of the reason we're in this mess is the British preference for the word 'gender' instead of 'sex' just because it seems more polite, somehow.

I had an email at work yesterday asking people to volunteer to be EDI champions and they listed gender as one of the characteristics they were looking to represent (LGBTQIA+ was listed separately). I emailed and suggested that if they mean sex that's what they should say. I haven't been sacked yet... At my other job I recently corrected our equality policy that listed gender instead of sex. The words were pretty much interchangeable until about ten years ago.

I agree with pp that this is both wrong and copied-and-pasted for elsewhere and that it probably hasn't been given much thought (although it should have). Also agree that if the job is what you're looking for I would apply and look to influence once you're in the door.

Get a grip. Most places say gender and don't think about it.

Are you on Fundraising Chat on Facebook- there’s a good old jobs thread on there, it’s where the cool kids hang out 😉

Sounds like you're just not a fit for that particular employer. More and more are moving to inclusive work cultures to weed out people like you, so it seems to be having the intended consequence.

NanFlanders · 01/02/2023 21:40

I don't think it should stop you applying. The DEI monitoring form should be kept separate from the application form. I've got two interviews where I've stated on the form, "I don't know have a gender identity. My sex is female."
