No trans women in Scotland’s female prison estate have been convicted of violence against women - Justice Secretary Keith Brown

“This changes, as you can imagine, on a regular basis, but my understanding is there are no transgender women in the female estate that… have violence against women convictions,” he told Good Morning Scotland.

Mr Brown added that, in exceptional circumstances, a trans woman could be moved to the female estate, but that would require the approval of Scottish ministers before a decision is taken.

(I cant quite belief what he is saying, but also note that he says the placing of a trans woman in a women's prison require Minsterial approval. Didn't Nicola Sturgeon originally say these decision had nothing to do with polticians, they were carried out by SPS.)

The Gender Recognition Reform Bill will not be reviewed to give more protections to women's spaces, according to Scotland's Justice Secretary Keith Brown.

Sorry if this seems like one or two too many articles about this, but it doesn't even seem those who are pro the GRR understand it in the same way.

"We have always been at war with Eastasia."

They really think the Scottish people are stupid don't they?

I get the impression that the vast majority of people would agree with the women of this board, that no man should be in a women’s prison.

Indeed, I suspect many people will be reeling about the fact that, in a supposedly civilized country like the UK, men are already in women’s prisons and have been for so long that politicians seem to regard it as normal and defensible.

This fiddling at the edges is a great eye-opener to anyone who has thought, up until now, that we have been exaggerating.

They will probably also be scratching their heads about self-ID and wondering what they’ve missed that politicians can still be defending it. Hopefully it will dawn on them, as it did many of us, that they haven’t missed anything and it isn’t them defending a completely illogical thought process.

It's especially dangerous since the reason why we have (used to, give us our fucking stuff back) single sex spaces everywhere is because you cant know the intentions of males.

So the very notion of a special process for a convicted criminal to see if they can go in with the women is fucking nuts.

I have to admit, I'm worried that the 'always been at war with Eastasia' tactics will work. Most people don't look into stuff very deeply. They will have seen the newspapers, thought WTF?! And then when they see all these deceptively reassuring government statements, they'll think 'oh I knew it couldn't be so bad after all. Must have been a mistake. Thank goodness this ridiculous case was spotted' and forget about it.

This is such a clear example of the power of the media. They set the narrative. Isn't it interesting that when the Union was threatened they stepped in to show up NS's craziness. But not before. And not too far - once she had individually been discredited, they pulled it back.

Yep seems you were right.

I wonder if there's any sneaky disingenuous meaning involved in the term "the female estate", e.g. it's not disputed that this delightful Isla Bryson character was put in the remand section (i.e. probably not with sentenced prisoners but also probably not in solitary confinement). the decision to put IB in a woman's prison can't possibly have taken on the basis of a bespoke risk assessment (e.g. based on the nature of the prisoner's crimes & the available evidence on the likely sincerity of their transitioning), meaning that it can presumably only have been made using a decision rule to take the prisoner's own word on womanhood, this despite the prisoner having so recently been proved, to a beyond reasonable doubt standard, a liar by a jury of 'her' peers (assuming the initial plea was not guilty).

334bu · 04/02/2023 08:39

The decision to put a 6ft 5 violent male paedophile into a female prison should now be ignored as they were released a couple of weeks ago. Wonder why the National didn't mention that?

nilsmousehammer · 04/02/2023 08:55

Oh what a lot of disingenuous bollocks.

Eastwood murdered their cell mate. (But he was male, so females will be fine, yeah?)

Dolotowski - sexual assault against.... well, little girls, so grown females will be fine, right? And that one's been released in the forlorn hope that this time they won't repeatedly breach their release terms like they have every single time previously and do their best to get into women and children's spaces. But hey until another kid or female's hurt then nothing to see there, right?

Green - tortured and murdered a bloke, obvs absolutely fine to dump on vulnerable women with I think 80% history of MH needs and 75% of history of sexual assault (possibly the other way around, but three quarters generally for both.

Gosh what are we fussing about?

And what the actual fuck are they smoking in the SNP?

nilsmousehammer · 04/02/2023 09:00

And in their righteous 'but we haven't put any women focused violence offenders cos we're sane and have Risk Assessments!' (Bloody awful ones that a village playgroup would do better job of for a toddler, but whatever....)

Uhm, Andrew Burns / Tiffany Scott (aka Obi Wan Kenobi/Mighty Almighty), serial violent offender with a string of convictions for violence against women (including members of the public, nurses and prison officers), assaults, stalking of a child from prison

and Bryson - both being happily trotted into the female estate until the general public noticed and kicked off.

Wasn't me miss! The dog ate my homework! Honest!

twitterexile · 04/02/2023 09:32

It is so outrageous. Just horrendous on every level.

Needmoresleep · 04/02/2023 10:11

Looking beyond the issue of housing trans women, this guy is ultimately responsible for the welfare of women prisoners. Vulnerable, disadvantaged women that we hope prisons are working to rehabilitate. Presumably in part by restoring their self esteem and dignity and helping them learn how to set boundaries with any toxic/domineering/manipulative men in their lives.

He does not have a clue.

BellaAmorosa · 04/02/2023 15:06

So what, Keith Brown? No males in women's jails. End of story.
